A BIBLICALLY-BASED, SUPPORTIVE VIEW OF WOMEN AS ELDERS, ETC.,

Gilbert Bilezikian is a theological leader of the Willow Creek Community Church (Bill Hybels' "megachurch"), and has written other books such as Christianity 101 and Community 101: Reclaiming the Local Church as Community of Oneness.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1985 book, "we realize how effectively God had used the female members of the original team from the pioneer days of the church... who seemed to have been providentially prepared for the challenges of leadership. But is it biblically legitimate to appoint women as elders?... There followed a period of three years devoted to the individual and corporate study of the biblical data... supported with practically every book and article written on the subject... Some of the result of that long inquiry is contained in this book."

He begins by noting that in Genesis 1:26, the term "man" refers to both male and female. "Both man and woman are God's image-bearers. There is no basis in Genesis 1 for confining the image of God to males alone." (Pg. 22)

He observes that although in the 1st century culture where women were to be neither seen nor heard, "Jesus presented them as models of faith." (Pg. 85) He adds, "This overt participation of women in the latter part of the ministry of Jesus established an audacious precedent" in the world at that time. (Pg. 96)

In discussing the possibility of women "apostles" in the New Testament period, he notes the similarity of the term "co-worker," which Paul gives to several women, such as Priscilla (Rom 16:3), and Euodia and Syntiche (Phil 4:2-3), and refers to the husband and wife team of Andronicus and Junias as "outstanding among the apostles" (Rom 16:7). (Pg. 197-198) Women were also "appointed to teach... There is no restriction mentioned in the numerous references to teachers and teaching in the Epistles except in 1 Timothy 2:12, where it is required that learning precede teaching." (Pg. 200)

Although it may not convince every evangelical, this book is a sober, carefully-reasoned biblical study of this important issue.

Thoughtful discussion, beautifully written

Vivian Gornick invariably delights me, whether in her memoir, Fierce Attachments, her occasional essays in various journals, her book about reading, or this new one, which gave me a lot to think about.
The Situation and the Story focuses on essay and memoir-writing. Rather than trying to cover a lot of ground superficially, Gornick lays out one main idea and explores it in depth, using a wide variety of examples to illustrate her ideas. It was particularly helpful to have long excerpts from these examples, so I could really get a sense of the essay or memoir being discussed. She deals most intelligently with the question of the narrator -- the narrator's "persona" on the page, and the relationship of the narrator to her/his material.
As someone who writes and teaches memoir, I found this extremely helpful, but it will be equally interesting to anyone who writes or reads narrative nonfiction and wants to think seriously about it.
It is a great relief to find a book about writing that has gracefully sidestepped every pitfall of the advice genre. Gornick's style is respectful: she expects her readers to be as serious and smart about literature as she is herself and, even if we're not, we can always find a lot to think about in her work.

A book that deserves the stature of its author

Vivian Gornick writes beautifully, whether she's writing about love, politics, or the craft of writing. The Situation and the Story is based on her many years of teaching creative writing and focuses on ways of making nonfiction personal without wallowing in self-absorption. In other words, it helps writers discover where the 'universal truth,' the essence of Story, is in the millions of anecdotes in our lives.
As an author and writing teacher, I've found this book invaluable and have read it several times. My copy is well thumbed and appropriately coffee-stained.

The Situation and The Story

The Situation and the Story, by Vivian Gornick is immensely entertaining while adapting an educational prose designed to enhance awareness of "self" as narrator. She uses excellent examples of non-fiction narratives that serve to further the invitation of speculation through tone, syntax, and perspective. The self as a persona is developed using wonderful writers such as Joan Didion, Oscar Wilde, and Edmond Gosse.
Vivian Gornick breaks down the writing barrier and gets right to the contents of human emotion. We are what we write, and our personal truths are conveyed in our words. She does a fabulous job taking a stand against the "boring, agitated" self and replaces that with the truth speaker who can move an essay forward creatively and effectively. Non-fiction can instruct without losing the personal voice.
For anyone who likes to write, this book is the first step to question your narrative self and begin to discover the wonderful implications that "self" can bring to your writing. I highly recommend this book.

Well over eighteen million Mexican-Americans live in the United States yet their history, literature and culture is conspiculously absent from the educational/social structure of so-called mainstream America. Enter, Growing Up Chicana/o which explodes the myth of the absence of the Chicana/o voice. Chicana/o is name the children of mestizo heritage (blending of the original people of the "New World" with the Spanish conquerers) have given themselves in defining who they are as a people and a growing political entity. The stories presented in this volume are unique in speaking to the reader in two voices (English and Spanish). You hear the story in English but the underlying tone and richness is Spanish. The interweaving of autobiography with fiction is a remarkable art which gives the reader an understanding of Chicana/o culture. Gerald Haslam's story, "The Horned Toad", centers around the relationship of an English speaking boy and his Spanish speaking Grandmother. The interplay of these two individuals shows the tensions of two worlds, two languages. Alicia Gaspar de Albar explores her cultural schizophrena through her story of a teenage Chicana coming to terms with her lesbianism. This book is fresh!

This book is a great book to have if you grew up Chicana/o yourself. It is both painful, joyful, and uplifting to recognize familiar experiences as told by the various authors. For those who are not Chicana/o, this collection offers a multi-faceted perspective of a group of people who have long been part of U.S. history. Chicanos, like every other ethnic group, have both their shortcomings and triumphs. We have experienced both oppression and hardfast pride. This book is a sweet example of how complex the lives of Chicanos are. A good book to read and then pass on to a friend.

Thematic Rhythms

Lopez creates an engaging frame for the vibrant visions of the thematic rhythms at play in the lives of the voices of this book. I have always been struck by Tiffany's ability to make stories and their meanings accessible to all, having the patience to explain the deeper dynamics at play within the stories to those who may be labeled as unable to understand the depth of such stories (including me). Thank you Tiffany for the great book and for being the best teacher I ever had at University.
