Brain health and reversing its decline.

I first came across Dr. Merzenich and his work in my other reading - 'The Brain that Changes Itself' by Norman Doidge.

The Irish neuroscientist Ian Robertson has described Merzenich as "the world's leading researcher on brain plasticity." (From Doidge's book, p 45)

In addition to Dr. Merzenich pioneering brain plasticity, often in opposition to his peers and against mainstream conventional wisdom, his work extends beyond the lab into practice and application. He has founded several companies that are treating patients who have been resistant to conventional treatment. These are individuals with developmental problems such as language and speech problems and autism. His work also exposes the inadequacy of much conventional treatment.

I am a layperson.

I have been on an odyssey of seeking answers to our adult son's treatment-resistant major bi-polar depression - going on for over three years. He lives with my wife and I and is no longer able to work. He was a high functioning successful professional. He has and continues to run the gamut of every main stream conventional treatment. He has also tried a new treatment still in the research phase of development. This new treatment is based on the relatively recent discoveries in neuroscience about the role of glial cells.

Dr. Merzenich has breathed new hope into our quest for restoring our son's mental health - and beyond merely bringing him out of his depression.

However, the scope Dr. Merzenich's book is much broader than this. It goes beyond the scope of depression. He shows how age related mental decline and disease such as alheizemers are not inevitably determined by fate. Not only can measures be adopted to maintain lifelong mental health but also to reverse and alleviate mental decline and disease.

Who should read this book? Unless you are like Avram, the 93 year old chemist described in the book and who is still creating and producing, excited about living, and mentally fit you will most likely benefit from reading this book and from adopting the practices in it. Who wants to spend their last decade of life with Alzheimer's and who no longer recognizes their spouse and children? In my opinion it is a must read for everyone - with the possible exception of Avram. If you are interested in avoiding mental decline for yourself or loved ones, you will want to read this book. If you are the parent or relative of a child with learning disabilities you will want to read this book. If you are a teacher or other professional dealing with such children, you will want to read this book. Or maybe you are just someone who cares about alleviating suffering and wishes to support progress in this area. If so, then I believe you will find this book inspiring and educational.

Groundbreaking Research

I am totally fascinated by all things related to the brain, so i was excited to hear that Dr. Michael Merzenich, a pioneering researcher whose work I admire had a new book out. And I'm so glad I found it. This book is not always an easy, breezy read, as it gets pretty down and dirty with scientific terms and at-times, complicated explanations of how the brain works. But that is whats cool about it. The book helped me understand more about one of the most complex organisms on earth. If you're a brain junkie like me, you'll love learning the ins and outs of how our brains are developed and grow throughout our lifespans, making us who we are.
Most importantly - Merzenich prescribes concrete, actionable advice for how we can all change our brains, and our lives, at any age. Truly groundbreaking research from a compelling writer. I recommend it!

All the Reasons You Should Rewire Your Brain

Did you know that brain plasticity holds the key to slowing the signs of aging? If not, keep reading.

I was interested in this book as a means to learn more about rewiring the brain after chemical injury. But reading Dr. Merzenich's comprehensive history of brain plasticity and how he helped pioneer this field, I learned how it can be applied by everyone and anyone to help them recover from health issues of most any kind, and to slow the effects of aging... to make us all stronger, more capable, competent and even more intelligent.

"Plasticity is all about getting the most out of each brain, for the potential betterment of each human life, at any time throughout that life," writes Dr. Merzenich.

I wish my mother had tried BrainHQ exercises before she succumbed to most of the symptoms we all associate with an aging person -- poor memory, difficulty understanding conversations when people speak quickly or there's a lot of background noise, trouble falling asleep at night and then waking up during the day, slow reactions (she recently hit a tree with her car, unable to move her foot off the gas pedal quickly enough). You may laugh, but I'm smiling, because Dr. Merzenich says it's never too late to rewire your brain, and I'm going to make sure both she and I put in time every day doing the necessary exercises to make our brains more alert, more focused, more fit.

I've already shared the simple suggestions that Dr. Merzenich says that he follows and that everyone else can too, such as to initiate some new activity or experience every day, to look for positive little surprises and take delight in them, go out of your way to make new friends, try a new social or cultural event and try to figure out why all those other people like it so much (yes, I'm going to attend my first football game), look in the mirror and do a self-assessment and correct whatever you see that needs correcting, and continuously enrich your life on both small and larger scales.

Dr. Merzenich also touches on important information on how pain is not only in the body but centered in the brain, and how mind-body healing can be of use in chronic pain, a virtual epidemic today. He recommends NOT sitting down all day, but mindfully moving around as much as possible, paying attention to the feelings of your movements and the sights and sounds in your environment.

But, I have to stay I was a little impatient in getting to the punchline -- the solutions to brain rewiring in the last chapters of the book. And the fact that you have to go to the Posit Science website to actually see what the brain rewiring exercises Dr. Merzenich alludes to are all about... I would have liked them described earlier in the book. But, I went right there when the web link appeared at the end of the book and enjoyed the BrainHQ program you can try out for free.

certainly the best book I've ever read about aquatic plants

As an experienced aquarist with a flair for biotop-aquariums I have a huge library of aquarium and ecology books at home. Most of them are printed with luxury paper and coverage including breathtaking pictures. But very few of them include key information that I exactly need. Can fish food alone cover all the nutrient needs of aquatic plants, if yes how? Do I really need additional CO2 and fertilizers? How can I maintain healthy low-tech natural aquariums free from algae with sun light? What are the most significant bio-chemical reactions that take place in the aquarium gravel & soil and how do they affect the general aquarium ecology, pH, KH, CO2, Iron-levels etc? Do plants really purify water, if yes how and which plants are better purifiers? Why are emergent plants better water purifiers? What does this heavy metal talk mean concretely? Do plants consume ammonia, nitrit and nitrate? Why do they generally prefer ammonia over nitrate? etc... etc...The author of this book apparently anticipated my unanswered questions of past and answered all of them in a step by step manner without a single logical gap. Don't let yourself negatively impressed by the modest look of the book. Its content is perfect!

First, the downside: If you want beautiful color pictures of plants, buy Nature Aquarium World (the other MUST HAVE plant book). There are no photos in this book. But if you want detailed, accessible information on how to create thriving planted aquariums, buy this.
Walstad maintains that thriving planted freshwater tanks can be created WITHOUT CO2 injectors, fertilizers, zillion-watt lighting fixtures, or many other high-tech gadgets. This book contains nothing but details on how she does so, from cover to cover.
If you've ever tried adding something (Iron, Light, whatever) and gotten an unanticipated result, you will probably find the answer here. She has lots of information about how plants impact every aspect or aquarium water chemistry.
This is a MUST HAVE book for plant enthusiasts.

This book is an excellent complement to the photo-laden coffee table books on planted aquariums. It is a thoroughly-researched treatise on what biological and chemical processes happen in an aquarium. Unlike most technical books, it manages to combine both detailed discussions of the science involved (including many references to the scientific literature) with practical tips that would be useful to the beginner, using a question-and-answer format in boxes scattered throughout the text.
The author, formerly the Technical Advisor to the Aquatic Gardeners Association, proposes a "low-technology" approach to maintaining a planted aquarium, eschewing the exotic materials and gadgets favored by the German and Japanese schools of aquarium design.

The best book for beginners

Out of curiosity I picked up Frank's book from the library and of all the ones I've looked at on how to create artistic tiles, his is the best. He made a rank newbie like me believe I could actually do this and make them pretty to boot! I really appreciate the wide range of techniques he presented, charts and recipes, and I'm REALLY appreciative of all the instructions he includes to make the very tools that he uses to make his masterpieces. My only regret is that I don't live closer to him so I can learn from the master in person. I may have to change that. *grin*

A great book about a mysterious, if not great band

Pink Floyd had always been elusive to the rest of the world, namely music critics and the fans who gobbled up their albums with no real knowledge of who they were. Syd Barrett played a significant role first as song writer and lead guitarist, then acid casualty who was dismissed from the band after their first album. This exhaustive book revisits those people and places that made Pink Floyd a household name in rock music. I was impressed at the sheer volume of research concerning Syd Barrett and his downfall from the world of pop music. Equally impressive was the inclusion of Dave Gilmour, who taught Syd how to play guitar when they were just teenagers in late 1950's Britain. The stroke of genius was Dave Gilmour joining the band in 1968, saving the Floyd from being a footnote to the psychedelic music craze that briefly saw "Swinging London" rave ups, and hemp smoke filled dance halls. Pink Floyd would create a new direction with Gilmour, and albums such as Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, and the universally accepted Dark Side of the Moon forever brought them fame and fortune, all the while Syd's specter loomed in the background, as lyricist Roger Waters would build a career on isolation and madness from his departed friend. This fine book covers all the history of Pink Floyd from the early jams in 1964 right up to 2007. No stone is left unturned in this literary history of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. A must read for any hard core or casual Floyd fan. All of your questions will be answered.

I like his sound better anyway

Been a fan of the Floyd for many years, so the book interested me tremendously. I now understand why the group imploded, and learning about Roger Waters personality has helped me accept it. I hope David Gilmour continues to provide new material. I like his sound better anyway, but wish the group could have persisted and produced more music like Dark Side Of The Moon.

Very comprehensive

This is definitely the most comprehensive of the Pink Floyd biographies I have seen. Lots of insights on what may have happened to Syd (and Rick Wright for that matter), and a lot on the ego war that eventually tore the band apart. Unlike a lot of the bands that came out of London at the time, these guys came from the intelligentsia and artisans of Cambridge and London, and were not from the working classes at all.

Signs for the letters and numerals through 20 (then by tens through 100) are presented first, followed by topical chapters that demonstrate signs for familiar concepts, objects, and places. Kids will learn days of the week, foods, holidays, clothing, pets, and more. Thanks to a concluding section that simply and clearly explains linking words, word order, and the importance of facial expression in signing, they will also be able to compose simple sentences and express thoughts. Kids will use this guide on their own, and teachers can use it in class. Even readers older than the target audience will come away greatly enriched and informed. Stephanie Zvirin

Sign Language for Kids Book Review

This is a great book if you have family members who want to learn sign language. The colors in the book are vibrant and the signs are easy to follow. Heller did a great job putting this book together. Great job!

Very nice for young ones who want to learn to sign.

Easy to follow. Bought this for my granddaughter who is 7 and is interested in learning to sign. She can follow it well and is progressing with this guide. She loves it.
