Do Not Buy This Outdated Book

I purchased this book through Amazon.ca and was horrified to find out that it is a re-print of the 4th Edition first published in the late 1940's. The book is now in it's 10th Edition !!!!!! The world of Gemmology has changed radically even since the 10th Edition so unless you want the book for sentimental reasons, do not buy it.

I downloaded the Kindle edition of this book presuming I would receive the tenth edition. Unfortunately it was the fourth edition and I returned it. I still very much would like to download the tenth edition. I hope Amazon does read this review and makes the right edition available.

The Napoleonic section includes an analysis of firepower and fortification, notably at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Additional discussions of the tactics of the American Civil War have been included. The evolution of small-unit tactics in the First World War is next considered, then the problem of making an armored breakthrough in the Second World War. Following is a discussion of the limitations of both the helicopter and firepower in Vietnam. The author points to some of the lessons learned by the U.S. military and the doctrine which resulted from that experience. Concluding is a glimpse at the strangely empty battlefield landscape that might be expected in any future high technology conflict.

How Battle is Done

This book was purchased as research for some writing I was doing. Being a complete novice at writing battle scenes, I needed it "spelled out" very clearly for me. This book did it all, authenticating battles in detail including some by Napoleon and to the present day. It was just as it was just as helpful as I had been told and hoped it would be. Though it is apparently,frequently recommended to those with purposes such as mine, I add my recommendation to those of others.

Importance of Shock Action

Paddy Griffith argues that the importance of firepower has been overestimated relative to shock action. For instance, Griffith contends that Wellington's army was successful not simply because of its volley fire but more importantly from the subsequent charge. He argues that at New Orleans poor troops lacking discipline failed to take a fortified line that good troops could have taken. He details the rise of light infantry through the 1800s. Then he shows that the shock action of brief artillery bombardments and stormtrooper tactics broke through the trenches of World War I. With every technological advance and increase in firepower, people have prophesied an "empty battlefield" and neglected shock at their peril.

Required Reading for USMC Majors

Paddy Griffith spent a decade and a half lecturing officer cadets at Sandhurst on tactics, and this book shows why.

After a brief introduction, an outdated narrative with the USSR attacking NATO, the book settles into four case studies.

The first study is that of firepower vs shock in the period 1808-1815, the Napoleonic wars, including the War of 1812. Griffith shows that earlier theories about the British lining up and pouring massed musketry into the French were wrong. Instead the British would use fire to disrupt the French long enough for a charge to be delivered. As an addition, Griffith studies a failure of the British system at New Orleans, showing that the rifle made effectively no contribution on the American side beyond sniping a single Colonel.

The second study covers the period 1815-1915 and asks whether the empty battlefield was a new phenmemon. In particular there are studies of whether the rifle caused a revolution in warfare during the American Civil War (later expanded into his book "Battle Tactics of the Civil War") and the French Army in 1914.

The third covers the relationship between Armour and Infantry, making a forceful argument that Armour did not replace Infantry. Parts of this chapter were later expanded into "Battle Tactics of the Western Front".

The fourth covers the Vietnam War and make another forceful argument that the Vietnamese simply outfought the allies on the ground, and achieved their objectives much more frequently than the allies. It is generally scathing of the US reliance on technology, and points out that the North Vietnamese were generally the tactical initiators and held the initiative. It also makes a forceful argument that what the allies needed was more tanks and heavy weapons to support the infantry instead of inaccurate artillery and airpower.

The final chapter deals with various changes in war since Vietnam.

In general the book is easy to follow, and it's arguments persuesive, and fully referenced. It is a book about the tactics adopted by a few scared men under fire rather and how the nature of war at a personal level has changed rather than a book on grand strategy.

How to Rebuild Small-Block Ford Engines

I found How to Rebuild Small-Block Ford Engines to be a very informative book. This book goes over almost everything envolved in rebuilding all Ford small-block V-8 engines from the 221 to the 351W, including parts that interchange with other small-block Fords and tuning up your freshly rebuilt engine.
Soon, I will begin to rebuild the engine in my '89 Mustang. The 302 small-block under the hood has definitely seen better days. It is down on power and it smokes. Now that I have read this book I have a much clearer understanding of what makes my engine do this and now I know how to fix it.
This book answered many questions I have been trying to answer since I first became interested in motors, such as, what parts should I buy for the rebuild?, what tools do I need to install them?, what machine processes should I have done?, and most importantly, do I even need a rebuild?
This book does a great job of explaning a rebuild but I was kind of bummed that it didn't have much information on performance engine builds. The book did make reference to the 289HP and the Boss and Cleveland engines but it didn't include information like how to port your cylinder heads, or how to pick a high performance camshaft. I would have liked the book to have mentioned something about how to increase the crankshaft stoke also.
This book is a bit old being written in the late '70s. It doesn't include information about the hydraulic roller cam engines or electronic fuel injection. The information in this book is still very useful despite not being current though. I personally recommend this book to anyone who is intending to do a small-block Ford rebuild or anyone who just enjoys learning about cars.

Errors in previous review

I'm the author of this book, so I watch the reviews, albeit a little late on this one. I've been busy authoring a book on how to build Windsor racing engines.

None the less, Shane Edwards said in his review, "Following the instructions contained in this book will ensure the speedy failure of your valvetrain." From this statement, either Mr. Edwards was reading the wrong book (giving him the benefit of the doubt) or he doesn't know the proper way to do valve jobs or set up valvetrains. I gave several methods of reconditioning heads and valves, including how to check springs and setting up the valvetrain. I warned against quick-fix methods, but opted instead for methods to give better than original life.

A telling statement Mr. Edwards made was, " He should try to write one book that tells you how to do the job correctly and find an editor who can eliminate the plethera of spelling and grammatical errors that rittle his work." I can assure you, all methods are discussed and shown being done correctly. From a review made in Road & Track Magazine, the reviewer said, "If you can't rebuild your small-block Ford using this book you're using it as a coffee-cup coaster." As for editing, Bill Fisher aka California Bill, the Publisher and editor of HPBooks at the time had a reputation for being the toughtest editor on the planet . . . literally. So nothing got past him or the experts who read the book. That's not to say an error or two got into print, but they've been corrected a long time ago.

For really hardcore racing information on engine building, which includes valvetrain setup and all other aspects of the process, my book "The Racing Engine Builder's Handbook" is now available. The Windsor Ford Race engine book is in process.

Mr. Edwards is right about one thing. This is not an FE engine. That's the big block. Steve Christ wrote that one. Clevelands and M-series engines are part of the 335-series of Ford engines and the 385 series makes up the 429 and 460 Ford engines. These are covered in the Ford V-8 book, all of which are available from Amazon.

If you are familiar with Ford engines or not this book is a valuable tool for rebuilding small block Fords. The information inside will save you time and headaches if read before you attempt your engine rebuild. The book is well written in a step by step easy to read format.

In the first book to probe the origins of this ongoing social crisis, Peter C. Mancall explores the liquor trade's devastating impact on the Indian communities of colonial America. The author follows the trail of rum from the West Indian producers to the colonial distributors and on to the Indian consumers in the eastern woodlands. To discover why Indians participated in the trade and why they experienced such a powerful desire for alcohol, he addresses current medical views on alcoholism and reexamines the colonial era as a time when Indians were forming new strategies for survival in a world that had been radically changed. Finally, Mancall compares Indian drinking in New France and New Spain with that in the British colonies. Forever shattering the stereotype of the drunken Indian, Mancall offers a powerful indictment of English participation in the liquor trade and a new awareness of the trade's tragic cost for the American Indians.

A Sober, Somber Story

Despite the subject, or actually because of it, this is a very sober look at early American history. Most accounts of Indian-European relations note the liquor trade's deleterious effects on indigenous societies. Mancall has finally foregrounded the topic and the issues it raises, and the picture is disturbing and tragic. For centuries observers have debated the physiological aspects of Indian vulnerability to alcohol. But there is no doubt that combined with land loss, warfare, devastating disease epidemics and ongoing assaults on their cultures, Indians have suffered greatly from strong spirits pushed at them by Europeans. Liquor was just one commodity snaring Indians in networks of mercantile capitalism, but unlike firearms or manufactured goods, it had no redeeming values. Along with destroying Indian bodies, alcohol clouded judgement, leading to sale of irreplaceable lands and promoting the destructive fur and deerskin trades. It weakened military and political resistance to the continuous onslaught against Native Americans. Numerous revivalist and millenarian religious movements developed in response to alcohol abuse, some of which still endure. Mancall's study is strongly based on primary sources while using social-science perspectives to interpret the data. Though the book ends around 1800, the patterns described still operate today.

This Series is "The" Reference for Stamp Collectors

The Scott Postage Stamp Catalog Sections (the 7 major ones) are THE references
for stamp collectors and sellers alike. I update my volumes only every few
years,as the newest volumes are expensive for the individual (they are
available in many library collections though). Used volumes 1-2 years old
are attractively priced and should satisfy most individual collectors
(retail stamp prices are somewhat out of date,but this is somewhat true
for the newest volumes,although less so). With my acquisition of the 2011
set (updating my 2001-2 volumes) I was delighted to see that all the stamp
illustrations are now in color (and there are many of them). The catalogs
are invaluable in identifying stamps-particularly those from countries whose
language is unfamiliar. They also can provide both history and
a geography lessons. Each stamp,whether pictured or not has a subject
title and color scheme given for it. Finally,the advertisements within
each volume can be helpful in identifying stamp dealers.

My purchase was just as good as buying the item new and much cheaper

I didn't realize these books were available in 'used' condition. They are quite expensive to buy new therefore my husband only purchased this particular Volome about every 5 years. Now that he has passed on and I am in the process of evaluating his collection for auction this more recent issue is a great help to me.

A little out-of-date, but a lot less expensive! It is working perfectly well for organizing my collection of German stamps, and I really don't care if the values are inaccurate.

Despite the goal of performance improvement, results from mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are often disappointing. Numerous empirical studies show high failure rates of M&A deals. Studies are mostly focused on individual determinants. The literature therefore lacks a more comprehensive framework that includes different perspectives.

Using four statistical methods, Thomas Straub shows that M&A performance is a multi-dimensional function. For a successful deal, the following key success factors should be taken into account:
• Strategic logic which is reflected by six determinants: market similarities, market complementarities, operational similarities, operational complementarities, market power, and purchasing power.
• Organizational integration which is reflected by three determinants: acquisition experience, relative size, cultural compatibility.
• Financial / price perspective which is reflected by three determinants: acquisition premium, bidding process, and due diligence.
All 12 variables are presumed to affect performance either positively or negatively. Post-M&A performance is measured by synergy realization, relative performance (compared to competition), and absolute performance.

Writer, nayyirah waheed recently released her second collection of work, nejma. While I enjoy poetry, it is seldom I read books of poetry by one author in its entirety. Yet, I read nejma in whole and in hours.

Before even opening the book, I took some time to appreciate the title, cover art and thickness. To my understanding, nejma is an Arabic word meaning star. nejma (star) was illustrated through the art used as cover. The size and placement of the author’s name caught my attention. in small font it was placed on the right hand corner of the book. while I am not sure of the reasoning behind this placement, I interpreted it as nayyirah saying “pay less attention to my name and pay more attention to the words I am presenting you.” finally, nejma is not a light book. Just as her words are heavy and plenty, so are the pages of her book. nayyirah presents to readers 172 pages of poetry. 172 pages of stories, 172 pages of emotions.

nayyirah has always made it clear that she writes for people of color, so it was no surprise to open the book and find these words waiting for me:

to you.
my people of color.

you are an altar of stars.
remember this.
always.
do not ever forget this.

for those who are used to traditional styles of poetry, you may find nejma hard to swallow. It may scratch your throat a bit. As other women of color before her, nayyirah creates her own style and her rules when it comes to poetry. Whether it’s her sentence structures or the placement of her periods, her work is not pretty. There are poems you read and they are pretty and beautiful, then there are poems you read and they are salt. As the name of her first book, nayyirah waheed’s work is salt.

what I appreciate most about nejma is its ability to explore different topics but yet connect. You can pick a poem from the 3rd page and a poem from page 164 and somehow, they are a part of the same story. I look forward to more work from nayyirah waheed.

Sensational second book!

I didn't think anything could strike me harder than 'salt' the authors first offering, but Nayyirah Waheed has done it again with her second collection of works, nejma.

I always love the thickness of Waheed's books ...they are so abundant, and I find this to be rare with poetry collections, especially these days.

This is some outstanding work - Waheed is such an atmospheric writer, blending in a myriad of themes some of which explore the cosmos - how it affects the soul in tandem with each of our personal understandings of environment, space and time. The poems are magnificent in terms of form and substance and are an array of rich, lush works dense with imagery, reflections on love and life and the inner workings of the heart, mind, soul and body - speaking on subjects such as the interior of anti blackness, journeys through family and religion and the joy in grieving. I was especially struck by the series of Madiba poems and the gorgeous sensuality in the work throughout the book.

I am changed since reading this, and I would expect that there will be more than a few profoundly affected by the words. I will certainly be buying a copy for a few of my nearest and dearest. I can't recommend nejma highly enough.

As a women and as a person of color few books speak to my experiences. Nejma has given me the chance to see and fell in a truer way. Nayyriah utilizes truth, the truth of her lives and those she is writing for and about, this truth will captivate you. I have never felt a more personal connection with a book than I have with Nejma and Salt alike, they are both astounding. The poems that you read will leave a resonating impression, I highly recommend that you read her words, once you pick it up you will not be able to put it back down!

Stunning

It's embarrassing that I've reached a mature age without ever having read anything by Henry James. I'd always wanted to, but every time I started The Ambassadors or The Portrait of a Lady, I'd give up after a couple chapters. Recently I had a chunk of time and I decided to try again, with The Portrait of a Lady. What an incredible book! To read a 19th Century masterpiece is a very different experience from reading a lot of contemporary literary fiction: you're forced to read deeply. The pace is slow, the unveiling of plot is subtle. You sink into the book and you breathe the air and feel the life of Isabel Archer and Ralph Touchett, Lord Warburton  and Madam Merle, among the many. James writes exquisite sentences: I almost wished I could read with my eyes closed so that I could let his vision overtake me.   It was an unbelievably beautiful experience. 

Isabel Archer is truly one of literature's great heroines: I did not want to like her, but she is an irresistible force, and once you've been introduced, you'll never want to forget her or this book.

The Portrait of a Lady

_The Portrait of a Lady_ by Henry James follows idealistic, formidable Isabel Archer as she confronts and eventually accommodates herself to an imperfect world.

The book opens with an extended, and ingenious, characterization of Isabel and some other sympathetic characters. Much of this is accomplished in a kind of _House and Garden_ fashion. We are shown a distinguished English country house on a hill above the Thames:

"A long gabled front of red brick, with the complexion of which time and the weather had played all sorts of pictorial tricks, only, however, to improve and refine it, presented to the lawn its patches of ivy, its clustered chimneys, its windows smothered in creepers. The house had a name and a history . . ."

. . . and so do its noble occupants, a wealthy American expatriate and his son.

When their cousin Isabel arrives, she acquires merit in the reader's eyes by her appreciation of Gardencourt:

"Her uncle's house seemed a picture made real; no refinement of the agreeable was lost upon Isabel; the rich perfection of Gardencourt at once revealed a world and gratified a need. The large, low rooms, with brown ceilings and dusky corners, the deep embrasures and curious casements, the quiet light on dark, polished panels, the deep greenness outside, that seemed always peeping in, the sense of well-ordered privacy in the center of a `property' - a place where sounds were felicitously accidental, where the tread was muffled by the earth itself and in the thick mild air all friction dropped out of contact and all shrillness out of talk - these things were much to the taste of our young lady, whose taste played a considerable part in her emotions."

Later, Lord Warburton, a worthy English lord, acquires standing through Isabel's appreciation of his habitation, Lockleigh:

". . . as they saw it from the gardens, a stout, grey pile, of the softest, deepest, most weather-fretted hue, rising from a broad, still moat, it affected the young visitor as a castle in a legend."

James advances his characterizations through dialogue as well, but not, at least in the first part of the book, through action. His work in the first part of _The Portrait_ is like the work of Osmond, a character introduced later in the book, who executes a minute representation of an antique coin using watercolors: the representation is beautiful, it is "art," but there is no sense of movement or striving.

Isabel eventually inherits a fortune that makes her independent; she is courted by gallant gentlemen, and she encounters some less savory characters. This is a sad book: we don't want to see Isabel brought down to earth. I must say I was dissatisfied with the abrupt ending of the book that fails to resolve Isabel's situation. Even with this imperfection, this is a beautifully written novel.

The Penguin Classics edition of _The Portrait_ is worth the price, with lovely cover art by John Singer Sargent. It's a good portrait

I read this, my first H. James novel, on the recommendation of a friend while I was commencing a trip to Rome. It was an excellent choice. I must say I was not entirely on board in the early stages of the book, set in England. Marraige proposals were happening too fast for my taste. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the witty repartee, which reminded me much of Wilde. The wit diminishes and the intensity increases on the continent, especially in its Roman locale, and it was here that I found myself much more interested. The book has a soul. Its characters are richly painted and became interesting--I enjoyed them all. The novel also has a beautifully symmetric construction. In its early stages I thought James was trying too hard to perfect his European literary colleagues; by the end, the novel stood on its own. So, despite some minor growing pains, I can recommend and will likely read another by HJ. Peter Washington's introduction in the Everyman edition (James' New York version) is an added benefit.
