The cases are placed in chapters where they make the most sense substantively-not separated from theory or in a separate volume-and vividly illustrate issues in cross-national context. An array of thematic features extends the book's analysis and effectively integrates case material: -Case Studies Forming the backbone of country coverage, these "baseline" cases are substantial enough for students to build foundational knowledge about the ten core countries of Brazil, China, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Nigeria, Russia, the UK, and the U.S. Because each case is tied to an analytic question or idea, students aren't lost in a sea of detail, but rather see country coverage in real thematic context. -Mini-cases Because no group of core countries can illustrate the full scope of issues in comparative politics, the authors include "mini-cases" throughout the book. These briefer cases focus on topics such as state failure, ethnic violence, and economic differences and feature countries about which most other texts say very little: Afghanistan, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Kenya, the Philippines, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, and others. -In Context These short fact lists-like those students might find in an opinion-leader periodical such as Harper's-take simple data and put them into interesting, often provocative context. The number of military coups in Africa versus Latin America or the change over time in the number of one-party states might surprise students and offer enlightening perspective for thinking through an issue. -Where and Why? In these boxes, students explore why certain events and developments happen in some countries and not in others. Why have some countries been able to develop enduring democratic governments, while others remain or become authoritarian? Or, why do some states have women in powerful political positions while others do not? -Country and Concept The majority of chapters include a table that shows key indicators for the core countries. For instance, in the chapter on the modern state, the authors include such data as each state's year of establishment, its failed state ranking, its government revenue as percentage of GDP, and its rating on the corruption perception index-all important measures of each state's size and nature. Introducing Comparative Politics is a very user friendly and comprehensive text with an innovative design. It combines a very useful degree of theory and defining concepts with interesting case studies. Its special strength is to interweave the case studies within each chapter, such that the issues are highlighted instead of just the political history. This should allow the student (and professor) to focus on the comparative aspects of the cases, which is the goal of a political science course on comparative politics -- Scott Morgenstern I thoroughly enjoyed Introducing Comparative Politics. The book's organizing framework is quite clear and well done, and the mini-cases throughout the text are well-selected -- Clement M. Henry I am very impressed with Introducing Comparative Politics: Concepts and Cases in Context. The book is exceptionally well done, and the treatment of the cases throughout the chapters is excellent and makes the book extremely user-friendly. Very good design, middling execution

I assigned this text for my comparative politics course because I've been very dissatisfied with the way comparative politics texts are generally designed. Most focus either on concepts and theories or on "cases", where the cases amount to a chapter-length discussion of the entire political history of some country. Instructors generally have to combine both books, and never have enough time to get through all of them. Students are also stuck learning a lot of historical facts that aren't directly related to the core concepts of comparative politics (E.g. "What was the name of the dynasty ruling China in 500 BCE?"). What is needed is a text that teaches the concepts while applying them to short, focused cases (where the cases are events, regimes, political figures or organizations, not whole countries), making all kinds of comparisons along the way.

That's what the Drogus and Orvis text does. A lot of the cases are great, with some from smaller less "important" countries (like Tanzania, the Philippines, and South Korea). Several of the conceptual chapters are also high-quality. The chapters on the state, the varieties of democracy, and on political institutions are the best I think; in general the discussions of political economy are the weakest and are overly narrow. There are also some glaring factual mistakes and bad charts. For example on p. 330 there's a meaningless chart which purports to show that Iran actually scores better on democracy and human development than the Middle East average. A small distinction if deserved, but the info in the chart actually doesn't support the claim. In the political economy section as well I found that some claims were outdated or just wrong (e.g. saying that Brazil's "recent" economic growth has been weak).

When my students shell out $80 for a text, I want them to trust the information presented, and I hope some of them keep the book for reference. But when publishers don't do a thorough job of fact-checking (and even basic copy editing) you can hardly blame students and teachers from feeling ripped off. This is not to pick on this text or specifically on CQ. This is a problem with many textbook publishers. I'll keep using this text, but I'll hope later editions are better.

Visual Encyclopedia Ships Review

I found this book to be a disappointment since I had expected more photographs to be intertwined with the illustrations. In addition, the classification of ships was disorganized in my opinion (for example, I would expect the Nimitz class aircraft carrier and its variations to be grouped all in the same section, instead of being split up in two).

Dr Strange Explores Black Magic

I read this storyline when it was first published 20+ years ago, and it still holds up. The artwork is ok, better in some places than others, but it is the storyline itself that is fascinating. The saga begins after Dr. Strange has defeated one villain by destroying many of his own mystical objects, and thereby releasing into the universe an equally dangerous situation. And in order to fix this, he has to hook up with former villain Kaluu, and learn to make compromises with his own sense of purity, because without using the energies of black magic he cannot solve the crisis he created. In many ways, this story arc really opened up & evolved the concepts behind the idea and role of a "Sorcerer Supreme." The good doctor has to learn to examine the greater good versus the idea of never putting anyone in harm's way. In some ways the story is a little chilling, because it examines the very concepts of morality & integrity on a large scale. By the end of the tale, Dr. Strange has compromised many of his beliefs in order to repair the damage he created to the universe. Along the way, he is joined on his journey by temporary disciple Rintrah... all in all, one of the several story arcs that make Dr. Strange one of the more thought-provoking characters in the comics.

Great story! Well written and full of mystic adventure.

This was my first reading of Dr Strange and it definitely didn't disappoint. The height of identity is questioned and put to the test as Dr Strange explores magics he never thought possible - all "justified" to safe the world he put in peril.

These issues are just as much moral introspection as they are action & adventure. The magic is fabulous, the dialogue is balanced, and the ending is awesome. Makes you smile in more ways than one!

An Akward Start, but a Rewarding Reading Experience

While I appreciate Marvel collecting this rather unexpected run, I am disappointed that it does not collect the entirety of Gillis' Dr. Strange run despite it being a perfect opportunity to do so. For those who are unaware of the backstory behind this run, Gillis started his run on Dr Strange with Strange's second solo series but that series was cancelled before Gillis finished his story. Gillis then continued his story in a shared anthology book called "Strange Tales" with Bill Mantlo's "Cloak and Dagger" series. Only the Strange Tales material is collected here, which makes this trade feel very much like you are jumping into the middle of the story. The first four or so issues are incredibly rough to follow, and even as the story starts getting great I do feel a lot of the impact of certain elements reappearing in the story gets lost as their initial appearance is not collected in this trade. Since I have not read Gillis' other material, I admit that I am only assuming they would have enhanced this story and would have gotten rid of the awkwardness in the first couple of issues. But I have a hard time believing that actually reading the story that introduces the Lords of Chaos that Strange fights in this story wouldn't have given a better opening.

The story begins with Dr. Strange already fighting against the Lords of Chaos that he unleashed on the world by destroying his magic items. The loss of his magic items also means he has lost a huge chunk of his white magic power, and great moral conflicts within this story make his already weak white magic even weaker. Dr. Strange gets forced to turn to dark magic to save the planet from his mistakes and the book gets more interesting as you see more of the moral dilemmas that Strange has to face. The thing that really makes this a great story for me is the return of Kaluu, a Z-List Dr. Strange villain from the 60s. Kaluu was a one dimensional evil wizard villain that appeared for about two issues, but he had potential as a character in his history with Dr. Strange's teacher, the Ancient One. That potential is tapped in this story and shows Kaluu as a more nuanced character. That nuance adds a lot to the story with Kaluu teaching Strange the value of Black Magic as Strange tries to maintain his good nature despite his dark actions.

Because of the awkward way it's collected, I would not recommend Strange Tales to a new reader but I would to someone who is already interested in Dr. Strange and read some of his other material. I do hope one day all of Gillis' stuff is collected in one book, but I am glad that Marvel decided to collect this even if it's in an imperfect format.

Our Sunday Morning Bible Study has been using Christian Discipleship: A Step-By-Step Guide to Fulfilling the Great Commission for a little over a year now. It is amazing to see the difference in the lives of our Bible Study members as they learn about their relationship to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and actively seek to develop that relationship. Their relationships with others has also been deeply affected. We have actively invited more people to join our Sunday School class as we begin this study over again. Former students are now willing to become disciple-makers. This book contains scripture after scripture to to back up what is being said.

I have used this for years and love having it in a bound edition. I buy all I can find and give them to those I have trained in discipleship. I still use the three ring binder version cause I love the graphics. Best for working with others I have found.

My church is using this book in our Abundant Life Class and it's amazing how long I've been going to church and haven't been taught that I should be discipled first so that I can in turn become a disciplemaker. A must have for churches!

About the Author
Thomas L. Rost is a professor of plant biology at the University of California, Davis and is currently the Executive Associate Dean there in the Division of Biological Sciences. He received his B.S. in biology from St. John's University, his M.A. in biology from Mankato State University, and his Ph.D. in botany from Iowa State University. He has taught developmental plant anatomy for almost 30 years. His primary research interests include the structure and development of roots in vascular plants and structural aspects of Pierce's disease in grape vines.

Michael Barbour is a plant ecologist in the Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of California, Davis. His research blends ecophysiology, population biology, and vegetation science. His current research projects include a state-wide survey of vernal pool vegetation in California for conservation purposes, a search for vegetation and soil traits that define "old-growth" status for montane mixed conifer forest and a continuum of values for those traits that correlate with successional distance from old-growth status, and a reconstruction of pre-contact old-growth Californian mixed conifer forest. These projects have been supported by the USDA Forest Service, the National Science Foundation, the Packard Foundation, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the California Department of Transportation.

Ralph Stocking received his degrees in plant nutrition and plant physiology from University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Davis. His research background concerns water relations of plants, photosynthesis, and chloroplast structure and development, on which subjects he has published over 80 scientific papers. He has also been a coauthor of nine editions of the UC Davis series of botany/plant biology books.

Terence Murphy is a professor of plant biology at the University of California, Davis. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in cell biology, and has taught courses in introductory biology, plant physiology, and plant molecular biology. His research areas include the effects of stress on plant cells, particularly on DNA, membrane transport, and oxygen metabolism. Terence Murphy has over 30 years of experience teaching introductory biology courses.

Simple read, informative

This book is written in a very clear style so that students of all ages can understand it. I used this book for a college level plant biology class, but I could see people using it as early as middle school for an introduction to botany. It may not be worth the price if you're just buying the book for leisure reading, but remember that you're paying for a textbook.

Its literally biology growing in a book

Everything is in the book, the price is right, but the book was not well taken care of. It looks like someone spilled (red Kool-aid) on the book, and some mold started to grow in the back pages. Funny, a "plant biology" book with mold growing in the pages, how literal is that, I bet the book companies never thought of doing that for a new type of learning experience.

time to wake up...

there is a ton of information in this book about remedies for various ailments, which is why i was tempted to keep it. however, every time i turned a page, i stumbled on more outdated, cringe-inducing, food-pyramid-era misinformation, such as, saturated fats like coconut oil increase your risk of heart attack, and you should have corn oil or canola oil instead. (seriously?!) it doesn't recommend sucralose (splenda), but says it's "metabolically inert" and would work well for diabetics. no mention of the fact that this stuff was originally meant to be a pesticide. oh, and go ahead and eat that plastic "food" -- margarine in a tub -- because we wouldn't want to get fat on butter...and while you're at it, stock up on low-fat dairy products (made by those nice food manufacturers), which have had all the nutrients sucked out of them. if the author had taken the time to look into the latest nutritional research, she would realize all of this "common knowledge" was basically propaganda that is now being debunked. coconut oil, for example, is one of the best foods you can give your body, but the corn oil industry was responsible for vilifying it to beef up their own profits. all the research is out there, but despite the fact that this is the "updated" 2010 edition, you're not going to get anything cutting-edge here. expect more of the same old regurgitated B.S. we've been fed for the past several decades, information that has served to make us a nation of fat, sick, misinformed people. a book that presents itself as the gold standard of nutritional healing can't get up to speed with information i can find in a simple google search? that's either laziness, or more propaganda. either way, i rate that a fail.

Reader Beware!!

I looked up a condition called "interstitial cystitis" in the version of this book that I found today at the local health food store. I was horrified to see that the recommendations given for treating this condition were exactly the same as for cystitis caused by a bacterial infection. This could not be more wrong, or dangerous. As an R.N. and sufferer of interstitial cystitis, I can tell you that it is a well known fact that cranberry, Vitamin C, and certain B vitamins are absolutely contraindicated as they will greatly intensify the bladder pain in an already damaged bladder due to high acidity. On the contrary, the goal is to de-acidify the urine so that it is not harmed more than it already is. I can't help but wonder if there are more grave errors in this book.

Errors in Hypothyoidism

I have used these desk-reference manuals for many years. It was a doctor who recommended that I get one and she was right. My current copy is '93, so it was time for a new one. Every recommendation I've ever used from this manual has worked perfectly. When I got the new one, however, I noticed some issues and a significant error.

I bought it specifically to get the most current information on thyroid issues. I noticed that under the disorder Hypothyroidism in the Considerations section, it says "see Wilson's Disease in Rare Disorders in Part Two." Hmmm. There are some issues with that.

There is no mention of a Rare Disorders section in the index at the front of the book, not on its own, nor as a section within Part Two. No mention of it at all.

First of all, the layout of the page headings in this version is horrible. In prior versions each separate disorder was in obvious bold print with dividing lines above and beneath that made the heading clearly distinguishable from the rest of the text, which makes it much easier and quicker to find. But in this new version, it is very difficult to read and takes significantly more time to actually find what you're looking for. Each disorder is just in small print that seems to be bold type but it is so slight you can't even tell at first. As if that's not enough, it is almost impossible to find Rare Disorders (with poor layout and no clear headings) which is just a small section within The Disorders section in Part Two, and is only noted by just a small print area at the top of the page with no distinction on the page itself to determine where the Rare Disorders start and end as separated from The Disorders general section.

In addition to that, when I finally found Wilson's Disease, it was not in the Rare Disorders section at all, but just within The Disorders general section.

Furthermore, the direction as listed above at the end of the Hypothyroidism/Considerations section that says to see "Wilson's Disease" is itself an error. It should say "see Wilson's Syndrome" which is a completely different disorder. Wilson's Disease (hepatolenticular degeneration or inherited copper toxicosis) is when the body is unable to metabolize the element copper. Wilson's Syndrome has to do with thyroid symptoms. Wilson's Disease also has opposite instructions to instructions you would have from Hypothyroidism and Wilson's Syndrome which could really confuse someone. Got that part?

Now, when you do find Wilson's Syndrome, which is related to Hypothyroidism, and remember it says under Hypothyroidism to see the section on Wilson's Disease...when you finally realize the error and find Wilson's Syndrome, it says nothing but "See under Hypothyroidism". Extremely frustrating.

By the way, Wilson's Syndrome isn't under Rare Disorders either, just in case you were wondering.

I have to say, the layout of the page in this book really stinks. In a desk-reference, you need things to be very well organized and easily distinguishable, so that you can find things quickly and easily. On that score this book really falls short.

I can't judge the other information yet, but that was my initial journey into the new version. This fifth edition is significantly larger with more information than the older editions. These reference books have a great reputation and are highly regarded by physicians. But, this latest fifth edition is not as good as the others. I hope this error is not indicative of the rest of the book!
