The Eternal City Must Be Toured!!!

Taylor Marshall's The Eternal City: Rome and the Origins of Catholic Christianity is a must read for any serious student of Christian history. Marshall makes the case, contra some members of the academy, that the Roman dimension of the Church was not an accident of history, but part of the divine plan of God foretold in the pages of the Old Testament prophets and fulfilled in the coming of Christ and His choice of Peter as the first Pope. This book is the third in Taylor's trilogy on the origins of the Catholic faith, and as he says, the most important of the series. This book will aid Catholics who want to know more about the historical roots of the Roman Church, and I believe, even more importantly, Eternal City will help non-Catholic Christians understand the claims of the Catholic Church and their legitimacy. Among non-Catholics, Reformed and Presbyterian Christians will greatly appreciate Taylor's Covenantal Framework, and many dispensational Christians will appreciate Taylor's employment of the Old Testament prophets, especially Daniel, in making his case. While this book is a must have in the library of any serious student of biblical and historical theology, it is very accessible to the average layperson. Do yourself a favor, buy this book, and you will not be able to put it down. - Tom Riello

Roman Primacy in Biblical Prophecy

In his book Called to Communion: Understanding the Church Today, Pope Benedict writes, "It would be exciting to trace the influence . . . of the idea that the mission of Jerusalem had passed over to Rome." (P.71)Called To Communion

Taylor Marshall has written that book, or at least laid the appropriate biblical framework for that discussion.

The Catholic apology for Roman Primacy consists in at least three steps:
1) Petrine Primacy,
2) Apostolic Succession,
3) Petrine succession acceding to Rome.

The case for the first two is made from biblical and traditional sources. The case for the third step has often been made largely from tradition.
The real value of this work is to make a Biblical case for a specifically Roman primacy. Dr. Marshall's task is to show the inevitably Romeward trajectory of Biblical Prophecy. This makes a valuable contribution to Catholic apologetics.

The Book is quite readable. It's style is strongly narrative, with clear, straightforward prose. It covers the whole sweep of Salvation history, and would serve as an excellent introduction to that subject.

I would have preferred more footnotes, but this lack does nothing to detract from the main argument.

Great for Potential Converts

As previous reviewers have likely noted, this book is the final installment in a trilogy. After reading the second installment, The Catholic Perspective on Paul, I said to myself, "I'll be a Catholic by next Easter." Easter has not come yet, but I am enrolled in RCIA, strongly considering entering the Catholic Church. Like the previous volumes, The Eternal City has a lot to offer someone from a Protestant background "feeling" his way towards Catholicism.

The central question of the book is, "What does Rome have to do with salvation history?" Dr. Marshall answers well, with a presentation that includes both the big picture as well as details that add color. For example, did you know a good case can be made that the Catholic Church was prophesied in the book of Daniel? Dr. Marshall addresses this issue in chapter one. And did you know that there was a close, if often strained, relationship between the Jewish people and the Roman Empire, even before the time of Christ? Dr. Marshall lays out an eye-opening account of both the inter-testamental period and the time of the Gospels in chapters two through four.

The rest of the book explores Peter and the Papacy (chapters five through seven), the destruction of the Jerusalem temple (eight), the reign of the Emperor Constantine (nine), and the fall of the Roman Empire (ten). Highlights of the second half include an intriguing exposition of the book of Revelation and an interesting approach to explaining/critiquing the Eastern Orthodox schism based on Augustine's distinction between the City of God and the City of Man.

Chapter ten is a fitting conclusion. After arguing that God intended the Church to be founded and centered in Rome, Dr. Marshall admits that Rome is not our final home: Heaven is.

The book is an enjoyable read. The momentum grows as the story of salvation is told. Very, very rarely did I wonder if the argument might be forced (and those occasions could have been due to my own ignorance more than anything else.)

If you are interested in learning more about Church history from the Catholic perspective, consider The Eternal City, as well as Dr. Marshall's other books. But be warned: you might find yourself saying, "I'll be Catholic by next Easter."

Can't go wrong with Palmer-Hughes

If you really want to learn how to play the piano accordion, then forget about all the quickie "Teach Yourself" single-volume books and start right here, with the first volume of the Palmer-Hughes course. "P&H" is an enduring classic for a good reason: The series is well-paced, well-ordered, explains things clearly, and is full of fun tunes to play.

A glance through the preview will show that this volume was primarily intended for use by children starting out with a teacher at a fairly young age. But don't let that fool you--it works just fine for adults too (later volumes do "grow up" a bit). And while it's always best to learn with an instructor, you can use these to self-teach if you have to.

Note that all the exercises and songs in this first volume can be played on just about any piano accordion, even a small, 12-bass model.

A great book for beginning accordion players. This series was recommended to me by a professional accordion player and I've really enjoyed the pacing of the subsequent books.

Still the Best

Everyone, including accordion teachers, seem to recommend these books, and I can see why. After re-starting accordion lessons after 55 years, I decided to order the first five books. Yes, they are simplistic, but they are thorough, and I learned how to try the 4-3-2 fingering method rather than the 3-2 I originally learned. These books were written when students were expected to put forth a bit of effort. The songs are simple and basic but every page or so introduces new concepts. I remembered some, but I like the fact that I can take my time and review the previous material. Though I'm an educator by profession, I think anyone can learn to play the accordion by him or herself with this series. There are other courses out there, but Palmer-Hughes is progressive and sequential and presents things in a logical manner. They do have the Prep series for those who have no musical experience, or who want to learn very slowly, but the regular program itself works great for most people. I recommend you order Book One of the Prep and Book One of the regular series. When you decide which is better, order the other 9 of the series you want.

Excellent compendium on the creatures and plants from the Harry Potter movies

[[VIDEOID:892d2c4463b626544b5c670264fbe9f6]]As a Harry Potter fan, I have quite a few companion books. The largest in my collection is Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey. Right after I bought Page to Screen, I discovered there was a collector's edition that included several other books. I did not get the collector's edition since I already have the main book, but I've always longed to see those additional books.

Harry Potter: The Creature Vault is actually the expanded version of the The Creature Shop Compendium book that is part of Harry Potter Page to Screen Collector's Edition.

This new edition has a makeover and now sports a purple coloured embossed cover. The page count has increased to 208. It's a beautiful looking compendium.

This book looks at all the creatures and magical plants that have appeared in the movie series. It's packed with creature designs, concept art, film stills and photos from behind the scenes which shows how the crew build the animatronics, maquettes, sculptures and life-size models such as the Basilisk or the dragons.

Concept art for the creatures comes in the form of sketches, watercolours and digital paintings. Bulk of the book consists the artworks with accompanying text. A few pictures were reused from Page to Screen but not a big issue.

Below's the list of chapters that group the creatures according to their type:

1. Forest Dwellers - Centaur, Unicorn, Acromantula, Hippogriff, Thestral
2. Lake Dwellers - Merperson, Grindylow
3. Sky Dwellers - Dragon, Cornish Pixie
4. Trespassers - Troll, Giant, Gnome
5. Shape-Shifters - Animagus, Boggart, Werewolf
6. The Working World - Post Owl, House-Elf, Goblin, Fluffy
7. Dark Forces - Basilisk, Dementor, Inferius
8. Companions - Hedwig, Errol, Pigwidgeon, Scabbers, Crookshanks, Mrs. Norris, Fang, Trevor, Arnold, Fawkes, Nagini
9. The Greenhouse - Devil's Snare, Mandrake, Whomping Willow, Mimbulus Mimbletonia, Venomous Tentacula, Dirigible Plum

There's a huge bunch of creatures and plants featured. All are given ample coverage in terms of art and text. Author Jody Revenson has provided an insightful writeup that talks about their designs for the movies, the story component and interesting details such as the technical parts on how the creatures were created, be it in computer or real life. I believe it will be a satisfying read for any Harry Potter fan, especially those who craves for details.

The book description mentioned there's an Eeylops Owl Emporium. That's actually a small 8-page booklet sticked to the main pages showing photos of several owls. The other extra goodie is an A3 size one page bestiary poster with 16 selected creatures.

One last thing to note is there are two publishers for this book. It seems that publisher Harper Design is distributing for USA and Canada, and Titan Books are distributing for UK, Europe and other regions. So depending on where you are and from which publisher you buy from, the book's price might vary slightly. I find that Titan Books sell it cheaper, and for overseas buyers, it's more worth it to get the book from Book Depository.

I really enjoyed going through all the information and looking at the beautiful concept art. This is yet another excellent companion to the movies.

Highly recommended to all Harry Potter fans.

A Very 'Tight' Vault

The 'Harry Potter: The Creature Vault'; 'The Creatures and Plants of the Harry Potter Films' by Insight Editions and published by Harper Design clocks in at 208 pages. This purple, slightly embossed book (no ribbon) is a wonderful addition to your 'Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey Collector's Edition' collection and is quite reminiscent to the look and feel of 'A Guide to the Graphic Arts Department' (minus the orange). This thoroughly expanded book contains a new introduction, fully fledged descriptions, two to four times the amount of pictures per creature/plant, and what makes this special is that a majority of the pictures are new to this volume ... so minus the concept and organization, it is entirely new. As a bonus, the book comes with a small Eeylops Owl Emporium pamphlet and a pull-out Bestiary Poster of 16 creatures.

The green embossed, faux-leather book (with ribbon) has beautiful bounding, and although the page count, descriptions and images are far less for this edition, it does come with completely different pictures.

This book is an Expanded reprinting of The Creature Vault book previously only available in the limited edition and tre expensive book set; Page to Screen Collectors Edition.

Embossed paper boards with a design meant to simulate fabric covered cover boards, accented with metallic gold - Emulating the previous limited edition. Very nicely done.

A few images are revisits from the Page to Screen tome, 90 percent of the images are exclusive to this volume.

Many many images through out, Full page, half page, quarter page and all.

Very complete use of the page layouts as every creature in the Potter universe is explored and given its fair share of page time; With the majority given multiple pages of insightful text and development art, both two dimensional and sculpted work.

All artwork is given it's proper attribution to the artist behind the work is most cases (WETA books does the best at resolving this, giving each artwork shown the initials of the artist and a decoder key).

Overhyped and not well written IMO. Tim O'Brien this is not!

Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I thought that The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel was hot garbage. I didn't give it one-star because to say I "hated it" would have been a little over the top, but I certainly didn't like it. I read this as part of a Military Literature class for college and if not for that I wouldn't have finished reading it. Funny, because the forward by the author made it seem like it was going to be "epic". Not sure why anyone would think this is quality stuff, but like I said earlier, different strokes for different folks. Oh and before someone thinks that I "just didn't get it", I am a combat veteran with seven tours. So I get it, I just didn't like it. Cheers!
