Very "old-school" in appearance, but the technique is as apropos today as when this little tome was written. Nostalgic, yet timeless. Love the "property of the city of New York" stamp on the Intro page.

This book is a splendid and valuable addition to this subject. The whole document is well written and I have no hesitation to recommend that this can be adapted as a text book for graduate courses in BIDM. The students will find it easy to read and follow, The style is lucid and explains the concepts and wholeness without going into any complicated maths.
The author has taken immense pains to keep the writing style simple and easy to follow. This book develops the intuition and generates an interest among the students in this field. Even a casual reader of the book will be left with a keen desire to learn more because this book nicely and clearly brings out the practical benefits. The Case exercises are very good and nicely planned. The book is very reasonably priced.

I have studied data mining for six month in my undergraduate study but couldn't grasp the detail knowledge about data mining and data warehousing. I found the clear understanding about data mining and business intelligence within 10 days from the Business Intelligence & Data Mining book written by Dr. Anil Maheshwari. Along with the fort understanding, I became able to do project in data mining and business intelligence with using different data mining techniques and tools. I found the material very sweet and short and written with simple language. If one want to learn the data mining and business intelligence s/he can take advantage from this book. I appreciate and thank from inner core of heart to Dr. Maheshwari for his great job.

Deceptively simple, then it hits you, bang!

Dr. Anil Maheshwari has done a great job in taking a complex, highly important subject area and making it accessible to everyone.
The book begins by simply connecting to what you know, and then bang - you've suddenly found out about Decision Trees, Regression Models and Artificial Neural Networks, not to mention cluster analysis, mining and Big Data.

It takes real experience and authority, as well as a great generosity of spirit to be able to write like this. For instance in Chapter 12 on Big Data, Dr. Maheshwari presents "The Big Data Landscape" that gives you a great overview on a single page.

I also much appreciated the way the Primer sections are made available, for beginners, and there is also a way for more advanced readers to get to stuff that is useful to take them to the next level.

And by the way, this was one of the easiest to read books that I have on my Kindle. I often feel the need to print out books, but this one flows magnificently so you just get it.
I kept putting off reading it for some time, but in the end it only took a few hours, though I know it's there for me when I return again to re-examine and contemplate the "Caselets", adapting them to my own specific area of expertise.

I highly recommend this book as a great introduction to what is one of the most important areas for managers across all functional areas. It's the kind of book that will stay evergreen, and I hope to see more titles to follow.

Good health through better eating and exercise is more realistic that you'd think

I did a lot of research about nutrition, then I found this book where the work was all done for me. It is refreshing to find a doctor that wants us to get healthy through whole foods and proper exercise and avoid all the medications and all their side effects. The change in diet is easier than you think and becomes a lifestyle. Wholefoods are very tasty, especially when you eliminate the sugar. Everything else taste better after the sugar has is avoided.. I've got a sweet tooth and get chocolate cravings, but after being on a whole food diet, I don't get those cravings. I think this should be taught in schools. A good foundation can last a lifetime.I do have a spurge day once in a while, but get right back to healthy foods and am happy to do it. This book makes it easier. It is more of a pamphlet, so it's a quick read.

St. Augustine and his Times

It is said that if anyone claims to have read all of Augustine, he is a liar. Certainly, given the sheer amount of written works by Augustine, some even found recently, this is a reasonable phrase. But Coral Harrison comes very close to proving this phrase wrong.
In this exceptionally well-written text, Harrison outlines the major threads in Augustine's thought, seeing them in the context of his life and his times. Along with this, she clearly has a good grasp on the veritable ocean of secondary literature on Augustine.
For those not familiar with St. Augustine's theology and philosophy, this is an excellent introduction to the bishop of Hippo Regius. For those who are familiar with Augustine, or even specialize in him, this is still a helpful text. As Augustine's thought goes both far and wide, Harrison illustrates the connections between them, as well as helping the experienced reader see elements of Augustine's thought that he/she may not be familiar with.
As a warning, though - one should not take this text as exhaustive. So, for instance, on Augustine's political theory and views on coercion, Harrison gives some pages to this, but only hinting at its complexity. Certainly, this says nothing bad about her book - one can't address everything in 220 pages. But it is a caution.
One other note. One sees, at times, "context" used in as a codeword for "postmodern" or the like. Thankfully, this book is spared that nonsense. Harrison's book is solid, well-versed in primary and secondary literature, and not pedantic. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Paul Lauter is the Smith Professor of Literature at Trinity College. He has served as president of the American Studies Association and is a major figure in the revision of the American literary canon.

Richard Yarborough is Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of California-Los Angeles. His work focuses on African American literature and on the construction of race in U.S. culture. He directs the University Press of New England's Library of Black Literature series.

John Alberti teaches at Northern Kentucky University and has a Ph.D. in American literature from UCLA. His main area of research is multicultural American literature and culture.

Mary Pat Brady teaches U.S. Literature. She has written extensively on contemporary U.S. Latino literature.

Dr. Bryer is an expert on F. Scott Fitzgerald and is president of the International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society. He was an editor of DEAR SCOTT, DEAREST ZELDA: THE LOVE LETTERS OF F. SCOTT AND ZELDA FITZGERALD (Macmillan).

About the Author
David Miles is Professor of Finance at Imperial College, University of London. He is also an economic consultant to Merrill Lynch. He specializes in research on financial markets. Miles worked for the Bank of England for several years after graduating from Oxford. After a spell in the economics
department at Birkbeck College, he was Chief UK Economist for Merrill Lynch. He joined Imperial College in 1996. He has published widely on many aspects of finance and macroeconomics. Gareth Myles is Professor of Economics at the University of Exeter and a Research Fellow of the Institute for Fiscal
Studies. He specializes in research on public economics. Myles worked at the University of Warwick for five years after completing his D.Phil. at Oxford, and joined Exeter in 1992. He holds editorial positions with Fiscal Studies, the Journal of Public Economic Theory, and the Review of Economic
Studies, and has published widely on many aspects of public economics and microeconomics. Ian Preston is a Reader in Economics at University College London, which he joined in 1991 after a Research Fellowship at Nuffield College, Oxford. He is also a Research Fellow of the Institute for Fiscal
Studies. His research interests are in applied microeconomics with particular focus on household behaviour and public policy. He has been editor of Fiscal Studies and currently edits the Economic Journal Conference Volume.

A solid book

This is a solid treatment of public economic theory as it has developed since the work of Samuelson. The book starts by developing the general equilibrium approach to studying public economics and proceeds to relax assumptions and introduce new ideas. Most big topics in public econ are treated to some extent.
The book is aimed at graduate students or advanced undergrads. For the latter use one would really require supplementary material introducing some major empirical trends in public finance, unless the students have had it already.
The flipside of the breadth of the book is that its depth is limited on some important topics. Naturally different people have different beliefs about the appropriate stress, but incomplete information in particular received nowhere near the treatment it should have. There's some mention, and naturally some comes through in the treatment of optimal taxation, but it's not enough to enable someone to make any sense of the many and important results treating public econ from a mechanism design standpoint, which is a reasonable goal for a book like this. Bayesian equilibrium is not even formally defined. Laffont's text _Fundamentals of Public Economics_ has some more emphasis on this (his _Economics of Information and Uncertainty_ has even more, though not specifically from a public econ perspective). Chapter 6 of Myerson's _Game Theory_ and chapter 7 of Fudenberg & Tirole's _Game Theory_ may be useful supplements also.

The "Apocalypse" of Narnia

The world of Narnia is coming to an end. A false Aslan is abroad in the land, and the people (and beasts) struggle to follow what they think is the truth. Eustace and Jill, from The Silver Chair, are sent to Narnia to help the last king of that land rally his troops for the final battle.

This is the apocalyptic volume of The Chronicles of Narnia. If The Magician's Nephew speaks of a creation reminiscent of the book of Genesis, this book speaks of an end reminiscent of that foretold in the book of Revelation. Here, everything comes to an end, and the entire purpose of the existence of Narnia is finally explained by Aslan. The Christian references are unmistakable. Aslan, like the Biblical Christ in Revelation, triumphantly comes to bring an end to his world and save his people. Most of the material in this book is very Christian-like, all the way down to the separating of the creatures on the right and left hands of Aslan.

This, the final volume of the Chronicles, brings everything to a head. This book provides the so-called meaning of life, and gives validity and value to all of the good deeds the children have been trying to do since the first book. Here, the good have their reward. The descriptions in this book (especially the end) are absolutely beautiful, and the finale is nothing short of moving. Lewis, a master of Christian apology, succeeds here in bringing to life the Christian concept of the end of the world, and of the final rewards of the just. No part of the Chronicles of Narnia would be complete without the vision afforded by this, the final book.

Voyaging

The second volume of the Narnia Chronicles closed with the possibility of Lucy and Edmund -- though not their older siblings -- returning to Narnia. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" makes good on that story, with the intrepid pair (plus a whiny cousin) returning on a strange sea voyage.

After the events of "Prince Caspian," Lucy and Edmund are sent off to stay with their obnoxious cousin Eustace. But when they admire a picture of a strange ship, suddenly all three kids are sucked in -- and land in a Narnian sea. On board the ship is King Caspian, now fully grown, who is determined to find a bunch of knights exiled by his murderous uncle, even if he has to go to the edge of the world (literally).

Lucy and Edmund are thrilled to be back in Narnia again, but Eustance proceeds to make trouble any way he can, complaining and causing trouble among the crew. But there are problems more horrifying than any of them can guess, from dragons to sinister "gold water" to a region filled with their worst nightmares.

"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of Lewis's most original and tightly-written Narnian adventures. It's also a bit of a break from form. After two books of battles against evil tyrants, "Voyage" simply goes where no man/woman/mouse has gone before, and gives us a view of the Narnian world as more than one isolated little region.

And in some ways, it's also the darkest Chronicle. Lewis explores the theme of greed here -- greed for power, beauty, money and magic -- and has some scenes both chilling and majestic. But his archly humorous style peeks through in several places, whether it's pompous mouse Reepicheep or tea with a reclusive old wizard.

Edmund and Lucy are their usual plucky selves, albeit a bit more mature than before. But "Voyage" also introduces one of Lewis' most interesting characters in Eustace Clarence Scrubb. Like Edmund, Eustace is initially a peevish, lying boy who generally makes trouble, but slowly learns his errors. But unlike Edmund, Eustace doesn't have to ally himself to the baddie to learn that.

"Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was a turning point for the Narnia Chronicles, as well as the one that began venturing into darker territory. Engaging and tightly written.

questing after the Kingdom

I have put off reviewing "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" for a long time. There is no other book I have so longed to recommend to others, but I have felt (and still feel) totally inadequate when it comes to expressing what a wonderful story this is. I could go on for days about all the wonderful things contained here. That said, I will try and focus on only a few aspects of this book and then plead with you to read it.
First, I must note that I feel this story should be read in the context of the entire Narnian series. It stands on its own nicely enough, but the deep background of the previous tales adds richness and texture to the tale.
Secondly, I must note that this book is highly enjoyable because it works on two levels. The tale as a whole is the story of a journey into unknown lands. With each new place they visit, the whole is broken into wonderful episodes. My favorite episode (with the exception of the ending) is the island where dreams come true...its not what one would expect.
The character of Eustace is my favorite of all the humans in the Narnian books. This story is partly a tale of his transformation. This seems to be a universal human desire; but Eustace, like all who truly seek transformation must, finds impossible to reform himself. This is an especially timely lesson for our "self-help" culture at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
This brings me to what I like best of "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." Let me preface what I say here by making it clear that no one hates heavy-handed use of allegory as much as I do. However, the allegory that is "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of the greatest things of beauty I have ever encountered.
In one form or another we are all questing after an unseen kingdom. Be it the kingdom of God, Materialism, or simply of the Self--we are all, like Caspian and his pals, on a quest. I don't wish to give away any endings, but let me just say that the greatest truth Lewis expresses in his book is that no one can reach the True Kingdom on their own.
I urge you to read this book. If I could only have a handful of books, this one would definitely be among them. I give "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" my highest recommendation.

Highly readable yet includes so many details!

The author teaches my kids and he is a true Renaissance man. This is not his only area of expertise--he has his Juris Doctorate, as well as a great knowledge of Philosophy and Ethics. My kids love him. But this is a book review so here are the facts: This is a huge volume written chronologically from the time of Sumer which ended in 2316BC to the Fall of Jerusalem in 70AD. Thankfully, it has a detailed index, however the index (not the text) is a bit difficult to read because of the fine print & the wide space between the subject and the page numbers. I use this book for two purposes: As a reference guide to look up details about various Bible characters & time periods since I teach a Bible Study Fellowship class. This is also the textbook for my 9th-grader whom I am currently home-schooling. I would have to say this is a bit much for a 9th grader to handle. Although readable, the details and facts are overwhelming to absorb. He cannot take this all in without some direction on what the important points are to remember and why some things are more important than others. This would be an excellent text to use alongside a study of the Old Testament if you really wanted to understand the historical context and what was going on in the countries and cultures in and around Israel/Palestine. Overall, this is an essential reference for any Bible teacher or historian focusing on any time period from Gilgamesh (or Genesis) to Vespasian. And for those to whom it matters, this is not necessarily written from a Pre-millenial perspective, which I actually found rather interesting.

An Amazing Effort!

BRAVO! This book is stunning at many levels. Initially, it is a visually attractive product -- an over-sized text, large print, interesting pictures and graphics throughout -- plus a beautiful, striking cover! More importantly, the interior does not disappoint. Mr. Gore tackles a daunting task -- covering massive chunks of history -- with a perfect mix of breadth and depth. His control of the narrative is impressive. His style is easy, clear and accessible. He gives the reader all of the "history stuff" and adds spicy, little-known details about famous people and places along the way. The subtitle is instructive. Understanding the world that shaped the Bible makes the Bible itself more three dimensional, more real,more human. I came away from the book thankful for all of the good work done for me by the author. He tells me things I really like knowing but have none of the drive necessary to find out on my own. The book does exactly what it's supposed to do -- it's an academically literate introduction to a massive subject -- and it's interesting! Mr. Gore has done all of the heavy lifting and the reader gets all the benefits. In sum, I agree with the writer's self-assessment. He's right when he describes the text as delivering the kind of classical education he wishes he could have received earlier in life. Lastly, it can also serve as a great teaching resource.

I have a love for history and am constantly seeking to learn more, especially where history and The Bible intersect. This book does cover a lot of Bible history but, as my dad would say, "It is a mile wide but only an inch deep."

Insight did an outrageous work with this book; it’s actually one of the prettiest looking videogame books I’ve ever opened. From start to finish the book will offer information about the world of Sanctuary, its complete history, biographies from the people that live in it, and the demons that threaten it. To accompany every biography, there is a gorgeous illustration made by Blizzard. Insight’s website doesn’t do justice to this book; every page looks quite different to what it looks like in the site. It has been a completely different experience from what I was expecting.

Insight managed to capture the dark atmosphere of the series in this 147 page book, and will give new players and fans of the series an amazing source for Diablo’s story. I definitely recommend this book for every single fan of the Diablo series, you will not regret spending your cash in it, and even if you are not a fan of the series, you should check what this book has to offer. —Just Push Start

Terrific book for fans....

I just got my copy this morning, I have to say this is one of the nicest game companion books I have purchased over the years. Being a Diablo fan since the original game I knew I had to pick this up and it doesn't disappoint, Blizzard has a knack for making great collector items.

The cover of the book itself is a textured relief design, it's in a matte type finish and looks great. The red band you see around the book comes off and their is actually no text on the outside cover itself. The inside of the book is where it really shines however! The pages of the book have been rough cut on the edges giving them the appearance of old weathered pages, they also used a weathered yellow appearance on the pages themselves completing the ancient tome look.

The books contents are presented by the great man himself Deckard Cain, without spoiling to much of the content I will say it runs the gamut of all things Diablo. The villains, the heroes, lands and lore of Diablo's world and even hell itself is covered. Including Deckard's personal notes to his niece. And of course some of the fantastic artwork of the Diablo world is presented as old sketches.

In the back of the book was also a nice little surprise. Inside the hardcover was a envelope attached to the book sealed with a wax seal style of sticker. Inside this envelope was a small map of the Diablo world, with the same rough cut edges that make it look very cool, was a nice little extra.

Overall this book is a terrific buy and a great gift for any fan of the series, terrific job Blizzard!

A great appetizer while waiting for Diablo III

Released before the game itself, this book is like a preface to Diablo III. Deckard Cain let us re-visit the Diablo universe, telling us the story so far.

-The physical book:
Epic in all possible ways. This hardcover is decorated with awesome textured artwork and the lack of any title (except the removable red band) make it look even more like it came right from the game. The 148 yellowish pages are thick and they have been roughly cut on the sides and to give that ancient book look and feel. As a bonus, they included an unfoldable map of Sanctuary secured in an envelope behind the back cover. This map is also roughly cut and is made of thick canvas-like paper. Overall, the quality and the presentation of this book could not be better. It's one of the best looking book in my library right now; I even gave it the honor to sit on the same shelf as my precious H.P. Lovecraft collection.

-The content:
Narrated by Deckard Cain himself, we are told the story of the Diablo universe in a narrative and personal way. Everything is in there, from the creation of the universe itself to the destruction of the Worldstone by Tyrael. We can also enjoy great descriptions of the heroes of the High Heavens and the minions of the Burning Hells. While reading it I could almost heard the voice of the famous item-identifier himself in my head. Never revealed before information is accompanied by great sketches, illustrations and side notes for his niece, Leah. It took me around 2 hours to read it from cover to cover. Note that I paused there and there to admire the finely drawn demons and angels.

Now, this is a must-have for any serious Diablo fan or anyone that can appreciate a well-made fantasy book. The only downside to it that I can find is that it made me even more impatient for the release of the game itself! Buy it without hesitation. I guarantee you will 'Stay a while and listen' to it ;)

A beautiful companion piece to a classic game franchise

I've been enjoying Blizzard's games since Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, and one thing I always loved is their attention to lore. It matters to the guys at Blizzard. For years, their instruction manuals included long, indulgent backstories to bring you into the world of the game. You didn't have to read everything to understand the game, but it greatly enriched the experience when you played through and knew all of this background info that could never be squeezed into a fast-paced action game. Most importantly, the lore they came up with was actually good and was accompanied by superb hand-drawn artwork. Potentially the best universe they created was Diablo and the world of Sanctuary.

Nowadays, instruction manuals are becoming a vestigial item. For most games, I don't bother to read them. All games today come with in-game tutorials and instruction, and their story-telling faculties are getting much more sophisticated. The Book of Cain is an offering to those of us who enjoy the written lore and artwork of the Diablo franchise; it moves those things out of an "instruction manual" into a fun piece of art. The sealed envelope in the back cover contains a map of Sanctuary (it helps).

The backstory of Sanctuary is told in more detail than ever before, but you might benefit from locating and reading copies of the manuals to Diablo 1 and 2. About one-third of the story is new material while the rest is covering/refreshing old ground. There is some retconning here, but that doesn't bother me, and was likely necessary to make room for the next installment of Diablo. Because of this, even if you know the lore pretty well, you'll want to read everything to get up to speed on what has changed for Diablo 3. The Worldstone - what it is, and its significance - is finally explained, for those of us who were confused by that plot point in Diablo 2. The story is interesting and well thought out, and the art is fantastic. All the of artwork is brand new, and presented in the same sketch-book, monochromatic style as the classic Blizzard manuals. The book is a pleasure to hold in your hands and take your time looking at each page. I can't say enough about how much I liked the artwork.

The writing itself is decent, though not great, and there are some sections of the story that were confusing and could've been explained more clearly. Also, a table of contents would've been extremely helpful. But those are minor beefs. My biggest "complaint" was that I didn't want it to end.

The price is very reasonable for the quality of the physical book and its contents. The only reasons not to get it are if you feel the in-game lore will be sufficient, or you feel going over the backstory again would be redundant. You wouldn't be looking at this product if you weren't a Diablo fan already.
