The main character is an Indian serial killer who incites racial tension by murdering whites in retribution for his people's history. The killer leaves clear signs of his motives by scalping his victims, and leaving feathers as gestures of Indian defiance. The killer is a conflicted creation--raised by loving white parents, but twisted by loss of his identity as an Indian. Alexie layers the story with complications and ancillary characters, from a rabid talk show host, to vengeance seeking whites, to liberals who find their patronizing espousal of Indian causes no longer so easy.

Seattle is rife with racial tension as the city is terrorized by a serial murderer nicknamed "Indian Killer" because the victims, all white, are scalped and their bodies topped with a pair of white owl feathers. At the center of the novel stands the mentally disintegrating John Smith, a 6'6" Native American ignorant of his tribal roots because he was adopted and raised by white parents. As the city's racial divide increases, Marie Polatkin, a combative Spokane activist and scholarship student, organizes demonstrations and distributes sandwiches and sedition to homeless Indians, while reactionary shock-jock Truck Schultz rails on the air against casinos on reservations. Three white men with masks and baseball bats (compatriots of a murdered University of Washington student) prowl the downtown area beating any Native American they find; a trio of Indians similarly beat and knife a white boy. Through it all float a number of psychological half-breeds, among them a mystery writer who's an Indian wannabe and a buffoonish white professor of Native American literature who is forced to re-evaluate his qualifications. Over the last few years, Alexie, who is Spokane/Coeur d'Alene, has built a reputation as the next great Native American writer. This novel bolsters that contention. It displays a brilliant eye for telling detail, as well as startling control, as Alexie flips points of view among a wide array of characters without ever seeming to resort to contrivance. Alexie (The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, LJ 9/1/93) was recently cited by Granta as one of today's best young American novelists. In his latest novel, a quasi-thriller, a mysterious Indian is killing and scalping white men in Seattle. The most obvious suspects are John Smith, an Indian who was adopted and raised by white parents, and Reggie Polatkin, the product of a marriage between a Spokane woman and an abusive white man. The novel's appeal, however, lies not in our drive to detect the killer's identity but in the sheer wonder of Alexie's fabulously sketched minor characters: Marie, a young, idealistic Spokane woman who befriends John; Wilson, a celebrated white mystery writer a la Tony Hillerman, who mistakenly believes he can elucidate the Native experience; and Dr. Mather, a "Wannabe Indian" who teaches Native American literature and clashes with Marie. Unfortunately, the humor that made the bleak stories in The Lone Ranger and Tonto so enjoyable is missing here, and the grinding of Alexie's axe is sometimes a bit loud. Indian Killer -- John Wayne Flipped Around

Alexie is a riveting writer who can make the heart pound and the breath freeze. He's also refreshingingly honest about the disconnect between the violence and suffering and soul-destroying abandonment forced upon First Nations people and the absence of recognition of that destruction by its perpetrators. As a mystery, it's a terrific read, a Dean Koontz or Steven King' telling of the wicked gone awry.

As a well-rounded retelling of what goes on inside people's hearts -- and how they run or wallow in their fears -- it's more like a gothic murder mystery dressed up in Indian clothes. If you don't know any of the history or the people, it's fascinating reading. But once you've finished the book, you realize, excepting the African American characters, everyone body else is one-dimensional -- even if exotic. All the "wannabee Indians" are reduced to being hypocrites or fools. Why must this be? Go into Asian or French studies, and one gains respect as a sinologist or diplomat. Similarly, the book is full of white boys and Indian boys who's only emotion is getting revenge. Yawn.

However, if you do read the work as an expose of how little we do know of the past and what masquerades as authority, the work is powerful. First off, we're tremendously ignorant about our own history. The word redskins became prominent in the 19th century because European Americans no longer could tell the First Nations apart. Take a 1,000 books on First Nations and 980 of them are the same old coffee table book on "Indians of North America" just getting recycled. Of the 20 remaining titles, 15 may provide information at the tribal level, and only 1 will be an actual biography. That leaves only 4 titles that were written by people who knew the languages. These could be reprints of a French of British work from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, or, if your damn lucky, your bookstore will carry something by contemporary First Nations writers, such as Mary Harjo, Simon Ortiz or Joseph Bruchac. Sadly, Alexie does not quote these people in his book. However, Alexie is right, if you don't know your past, it will come back to haunt you.

The second reason why the book is so compelling is that though the story is about the infant who is all but ripped from his mother's uterus to be raised by others, it is really about the mother -- who in order to survive herself must cut herself off from her own flesh in blood. She must become invisible in order to survive, which her son mirrors by learning the chants to make himself invisible as he carries out his deeds -- not all of which are evil. Although Alexie doesn't overtly raise it, we all know from history that First Nations families had been split apart and murdered for centuries. While Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclaimation in 1863, the northern midwestern states publicly paid bounties on Indian scalps -- at least African slaves had value as living beings. Within a few years of the Battle of Little Bighorn, Canada and the United States in 1881 both passed NATIONAL laws that forced the surviving native peoples into internal exile -- to live on lands where they did not come from; banned them from speaking their own languages; and, forbidding them to practice their own religion. It took nearly a century before these human rights were restored to First Nations people. The path of repression and assimilation is also forced on the lead character of Alexie's novel.

Ironically, the stolen little boy gets renamed John Smith, the most non-descript name among European Americans. Poor John Smith has not only lost his inheritance, but he has no identity even in his adoptive parents' culture. Alexie's description of the loss of self, loss of relationship, and the grandiose fears that grow in the poor boy's heart is phenomenal. John Smith is clearly afraid to be himself -- and what's worse, he doesn't know how. He doesn't even know which Nation he comes from and in this sense, he is as ignorant as the European Americans around him.

Alexie doesn't resolve the disconnect between the past and the present, the chasm between John's birth parents and adoptive parents, and the break between the wannabees and the bloods (which, by the way, is another 19th century myth from European culture). However, in bringing this pain to mind and heart, Alexie has achieved no small or easy thing. While Alexie is not asking us to bury the hatchet, he does do a remarkable job of asking us to walk in another man's shoes.

If you liked 2004, you'll like '05

The new edition has some added features like projected career totals and injury projections, but the meat of it is similar to what appeared in 2004. For stats junkies who just want the numbers, it's a great book. For those who prefer Prospectus and their comments (for better or, often, worse), this may be a disappointment because of its lack of commentary on players.

There is some discussion of items like the career projections and injury projections, but no essays that make his Abstracts or other books like Win Shares so popular. I'd definitely consider this a must for 2005 - a concise, easy to use guide to the essential stats that can be kept on your coffee table all season - but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who doesn't share an obsession with stats.

Best book on baseball statistics

This book is always interesting to read. It has a lot great info on every stat you can think of. Bill James has a talent for baseball statistics that will be valued for years to come. If you want a great book on hitting technique I would get The Science of Hitting by Ted Williams. Wonderful book that shows you how to hit over .300.

About the Author
Dr. Sulabha K. Kulkarni started her career in 1977 in the Physics Department of the University of Pune, India, where she established a laboratory in Surface Science, Materials Science and Nanotechnology. Her area of research encompasses metal, semiconductor and oxide nanoparticles, metallic multilayers, hard coatings, gas-solid interactions. She has international collaborations in many countries and attended conferences both as an invited speaker and as a chairperson. Besides being a life member of various science associations in India, Dr. Kulkarni is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (Bangalore), Indian National Science Academy (Delhi), National Academy of Sciences (Allahabad) and Maharashtra Academy of Sciences. Since 2009 Dr Kulkarni is affiliated to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune.

Good First Intro to Nano

This is an exceptionally good introduction to nano technology. It describes some of the fundamentals and then describes the processes whereby one can create nano materials. The discussion of process techniques is comprehensive and at a level readable by persons seeking an introduction but aware of the key factors.

The author also provides a good level of effort on applications. The coverage of applications is reasonable but the depth is limited since it is an introduction. My focus is in the medical area and I would have liked to see more discussions. For example EU countries ban nano materials in medical apps and it would be useful to understand some of these regulatory limitations.

Finally the author presents a broad set of "Practicals" which are process related insights.

Overall this was the best all around intro to nano I have seen and well worth the purchase.

This book is NOT about increasing your conversions―yet these DotComSecrets will increase your conversions MORE than any headline tweak or split test you could ever hope to make.

If you are currently struggling with getting traffic to your website, or converting that traffic when it shows up, you may think you’ve got a traffic or conversion problem. In my experience, after working with thousands of businesses, I’ve found that’s rarely the case. Low traffic and weak conversion numbers are just symptoms of a much greater problem, a problem that’s a little harder to see (that’s the bad news), but a lot easier to fix (that’s the good news).

Recently, I had a chance to fly to San Diego to work with Drew Canole from FitLife.tv. He had built a following of 1.2 million followers on Facebook, but because of some changes at Facebook, his traffic had dropped by 90%. He was now spending $116 to sell a $97 product. He was no longer profitable.

Drew’s team called me because they wanted help with two things: traffic and conversions. I smiled because that’s why most people call me. They usually assume that I’m going to help them tweak a headline or change their ad targeting, and solve their problems. But I knew that, like most companies I work with, FitLife.tv’s problem wasn’t a traffic or conversion problem.

It rarely is.

More often than not, it’s a FUNNEL problem.

After listening to Drew and his team share with me all of their numbers, their pains and frustrations, and their ups and downs, I sat back in my chair and told them they were in luck.

“You don’t have a traffic or conversion problem,” I said.

“What are you talking about? Our traffic is down 90%, and we can’t break even converting our customers!” Drew said.

“The problem is you can’t spend enough to acquire a customer, and the way to fix that problem is to fix your sales funnel,” I replied calmly.

One of my mentors, Dan Kennedy, says, “Ultimately, the business that can spend the most to acquire a customer wins.”

The reason Drew’s business wasn’t making money was because he wasn’t able to spend enough to acquire a customer. If we fix his sales funnel so that instead of making $97 for every $116 he spends, he can start making two to three times as much money for each sale―and then the whole game changes. Suddenly, he can afford to buy more traffic from more places; he can outbid his competitors, and he can spend two to three times more than he is now, all while becoming exponentially more profitable.

So, what changes did we make to Drew’s business? How did we take a sales funnel that was losing money and transform it into a tool that allowed FitLife.tv to spend MORE money than its competitors, while gaining more traffic, more customers, and more sales? THAT is what this book is about.

This book will take you on a journey similar to the one I took Drew and his team on. The Online Business Bible

Having had an online business since January 2003, I've read many, MANY books about online marketing, and have even purchased some of the big-ticket courses, such as Jeff Walker's "Product Launch Formula" and Mike Filsaime's "Butterfly Marketing". I've even had a chance to review Frank Kern's "Mass Control" and "List Control" products. Others I've learned from include Rich Schefren, Glenn Livingston, Todd Brown, Mark Joyner, Terry Dean, Yanik Silver, Jim Edwards, Willie Crawford, Jimmy D. Brown, Dan Kennedy, and the list goes on and on.

I can say, without a second's hesitation, that Russell Brunson's "DOTCOM Secrets" book trumps all of them.

This book has just the right mix of high-level strategy and low-level tactics to make it a solid playbook for anyone who wants to make their online business a profitable one, while operating with the highest degree of ethics and integrity. It has shown me where I have made many mistakes along the way, and as I implement the ideas, I'm finding that it's easier to attract the right customers who resonate with my materials, and help them see the value in owning my higher-end products.

The only downside to this book is that it doesn't address the technical side of things, and this means that a newbie will need to go elsewhere for the final implementation. The good news is that once you have implemented the information here, you won't have to rebuild everything again, because you'll have done it right the first time.

FULL DISCLOSURE - THIS BOOK IS AN UPSELL however, the book and the theory are absolutely A1. Russ provides an amazing look into the world of building a company online and sellling products online. Throughout the book he is trying to upsell you on his programs, his coaching, etc. Good read but idk about the upsells

Just a 255 Page Sales Pitch!

The first part of the book explaining sales funnels and value ladders is great. However, then he starts explaining the AC (Attractive Character) and then later a "sales pitch" he tried on his wife to let him "go out the guys". My wife is not stupid. If i tried something like she would have seen it coming the proverbial mile away and laughed in my face. Towards the end of the book you will begin to feel like you are reading the transcript notes of "get rich quick" seminar and then you realize before even finishing the book that it is just one big sales pitch for his online marketing software at $300/month.

He is apparently not the first to make the attempt. Look at the reviews of other books "related" to this one. They are all the same. They end with a sales pitch to buy into their online software. (BTW, you can get this book for free on his website by just paying S&H). I guess he'll just take the money from poor saps like me that stumbled upon his book on Amazon. I should have known better with a quote from Tony Robbins on the back. Oh Well. Sorry Mr. Brunson, you are just an everyday scam artist. I would like to earn my money the honest way! Just my 2 cents...

This book was recommended by a colleague at work. It is so easy to understand and from a person just starting to work and intrerpreting tracings and ekg's is great. The explanations may look too simplistic but for me it helped out a lot. This book is great for nursing students, nurses starting in ccu settings and telemetry technicians.

This book presents such complex ideas in an easy-to-understand way. It's almost impossible to get lost with this kind of narrative. If you're a serious studen of Quantum Physics, Parallel Universes, or if you just have a curious mind, I totally recommend you this book. Cheers to the author!

I can't say I think it proves parallel universes

But I do think the mantis shrimp is a fascinating and bizarre creature and that it will provide another couple of generations of scientists with plenty of work in bioengineering research.
