Not only does this book enlighten you to be the parent you wish you had, but it gives meaning to why we behave the way we do. I hope to see The Manual be a standard textbook in our schools. The message is priceless and the author has a heart of precious gems.

The perfect book for answers about behavior and personality

If you're on a journey of discovery and healing this is the perfect book to facilitate that process. Dr. Faye takes topics normally reserved for PhD's and professional therapists and presents them in a clear, easy to understand style. The Manual teaches the layperson the common personality disorders (bi-polar, passive aggressive, narcissist, etc) and their underlying causes so that if you are suffering from one or many of them you can take a journey of self discovery about how these disorders arise in a personality. We learn from Dr Faye that a personality disorder is not who we are, but rather a series of coping mechanisms built in our childhood years and that the more severe the disorder the more severe the abuse and/or neglect that caused it. Armed with this information, a person who may have otherwise felt hopeless can begin to learn healthy coping mechanisms that are the building blocks of a healthy personality. And he in turn can pass these healthy habits down to his offspring. I can think of no book that is more timely or crucial for our society and I wish I could buy a copy for every person on the planet.

I have been in the business analytics domain delivering SAS based predictive analytics solutions for the past seven years and I wish I had this book at the beginning of my career. There are text books on analytics and data mining which focus on the theoretical part without explaining the application side and then there are cookbooks which promise ready made recipes. This book strikes a fine balance between theory and its practical application to the real world business problems and how SAS can be used as a tool to solve it. The examples and sample datasets help the reader in better understanding of the concepts and its applications. The availability of SAS University Edition where students can actually try out the examples, sweetens the deal further. By following the learning-by-doing style the book takes the reader along each and every step of business analytics in its real world application. I strongly recommend this book for budding analytics professionals and pure SAS programmers who seek a business perspective on real world applied analytics.

Everything You Need to Know, Except How To Shoot

This book contains very little of what the title suggests, and instead consists of general information that exists in standard filmmaking/cinematography books. I didn't find much in this book that wasn't already covered in "The Power Filmmaking Kit", "The Digital Filmmaking Handbook", "Nuts and Bolts of Filmmaking" and "Practical Cinematography".

I would have like more tips and actual techniques on getting the "shooting" action sports such as specialized gear and cable systems employed in every single action sports flick no the market today. To devote only five pages to "action sport" specific shooting techniques for a book called "Shooting Action Sports" makes the title a misnomer.

Dean Sickler is the Director and core instructor of Dundean Studios, a working and teaching studio in Chatham, NJ. He has been in the painting and decorating business since 1975 having started as an apprentice painter in Los Angeles. In 1986 he founded Dundean Studios as a decorative arts studio and has since executed decorative and art commissions across North America. He has been active in conservation and restoration work and holds a BA in Art & Art History from University of Toronto. In 1998, Dundean Studios evolved into an independent decorative arts school and studio. It has since provided instruction to over a thousand professional faux finishers, painters and inspired amateurs with an emphasis on product knowledge, technique and execution. Dean has a national reputation for being in the forefront of the new water-borne technologies and is regularly consulted by multi-national manufacturers in product improvements and color design. He lectures across the country on numerous topics involving the decorating and design field and has exhibited and demonstrated in many European and US cities.

The fastest way to learn about real world color

I'm fortunate in that I went to art school and I work for a company obsessed with color, particularly pigment. I've had to learn the hard way how to color match by eye. You don't have to learn that way because Dean Sickler has made it easy for you. The Keys to Color breaks down the barriers of mystery put in place by housepaint companies and decorative product companies. They intentionally make it hard for the consumer to understand how they arrived at a certain paint mixture to match what you wanted. They give the color a goofy name and you buy it. But what happens (far too frequently) is you get the paint home, put some up on the wall and it doesn't look right. It's wrong. What's worse, you don't know how to correct it. Well, this book actually teaches you to look at color more accurately and actually how to correct color on the fly.

Dean talks about some pretty lofty subjects in this book. Color systems. Saturation. Metamerism. Color temperature. Using Complimentary colors to adjust. Color Bias. Luckily for you, he doesn't overwhelm you while doing it. Even the seasoned professional decorator is going to get something out of this book. If this book doesn't help you become a better decorative (or artistic) painter, then maybe you should have taken that job in accounting. You will learn about color and as importantly be able to apply that knowledge tomorrow.

Must have for all artists, designers and painters!

Finally someone writes a book for artists and designers about color, and who better than the popular Mr. Sickler who is an accomplished artist and instructor.

This book totally changed the way I see color and is overflowing with easy to understand and incredibly useful information including coloring paints, plasters and glazes, how to make your own colors, match existing colors, and working with metallics to name a few. Working with color and light was one of my favorite chapters and I appreciated the glossary to study up on some forgotten terms.

I said this is a great book for artists and designers, but it would also be great for art teachers, painters, or even diyers who want to implement the knowledge learned through this book in their own home.

Understanding color for fine artists

Dean Sickler's book is not just for professional decorators but for professional artists or anyone who is interested in color mixing. We have been taught in the best art schools that yellow and blue make green. Moreover, most books on color continue to propogate this traditon. While Dean was not the first to show this is a myth, he is among the first. He explains the reason why you don't always get the color you expect and does this in a very clear, simple way giving numerous visual examples. More important, he shows clearly how you can get the mixture you desire which, for me as an artist, makes this book invaluable. He has already saved me dollars for now I know what paints will give me my results and how to mix them. The more we know about the color tubes we buy, the less money will be wasted.
