Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher who lived from 1788-1860; he was influenced among others by Plato and Immanuel Kant, and in his turn influenced Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig wittgenstein, Thomas Mann and others. Schopenhauers work is known for its pessimistic views and beautifully written essays. If you like reading philosophy -or would like to try it- then I can recommend reading some of Schopenhauers essays.

This volume contains some essays that were first published in Schopenhauers 'Parerga und Paralopomena' (1851). The printed version of this volume has 101 pages. The contents of this volume:

GOVERNMENT
FREE-WILL AND FATALISM
CHARACTER
MORAL INSTINCT
ETHICAL REFLECTIONS

Great book

I was turned onto trhis book by the late Joseph Campbell through his writings. This book further helped me to increase my understanding of the topic. I strongly reccommend it. Great book!!!

Accessible Thinking

To take a book on philosophy and pass judgement on it is especially difficult. I think this topic more than others will in a large way play to your beliefs and prejudices - or it wont. With that as one means of measurement I found myself highlighting numerous passages I agreed with. I also found plenty of the book to be very thought provoking. This I would suggest means that the authour has successfully moved the reader (this one at least) outside of their conventional thinking zone - which is surely the actual point - i.e. to learn something.

I found the writing style to be far less self indulgent than you may see on this broad topic elsewhere. This means you aren't constantly unwinding vast amounts of prose before you can feel you have started to understand the argument being made. This isn't to say that books with a more flamboyant style can't be as good as this - it's just that this one is easily absorbed without losing the impact.

I suspect also that most readers will find the views expressed here to be contemporary. It's not old (in the grander scheme of things) but you will find that you need to make little allowance for the changes in the world since it was published. Perhaps in a similar way to Machiavelli, judgements on human nature don't change greatly over the centuries.

Excellent Text Fleshes Out Horror

I bought this book to augment my research for a film course I took. This book affords a concise, in-depth examination of the horror film genre and aims to identify its relevance in a historical context, psychological context, and social context. Horror films were long denied by critics as a substantial and intellectual genre worthy of scholarly research, but Kendall R. Phillips proves that they couldn't be more wrong. The films discussed in the text follow a chronological sequence, dating back to the 1920s with The Phantom of the Opera, and goes all the way up to the 90s with Scream.

Excellent book for anyone interested in horror films, film history, or with an appreciation for the much broader history of American culture.

Using this for a course I'm teaching on horror films

I've used parts of this book for a course on sex, gender, race and horror films. It's not specifically about those areas, but provides useful analysis and contextualization for the films discussed. It's a great book for someone who's new to thinking politically/sociologically about horror films, and great for a course that is getting students to think about films in different ways. The analysis is not overly complex or jargon-heavy, nor does it require extensive knowledge of other film theory.

The subsections of the chapters (which varies depending on the film) are clear and helpful: Politics/Nationalism; Economic Conditions; Cultural Knowledge; Sexual Norms; Family Home; Violation, and more.

I recommend this book for horror fans, folks new to thinking about film in socio-cultural and historical ways, and students/teachers who want to augment a course.

Excellent book for scholars, students, and anyone else interested in American horror films

I assigned this book for my Rhetoric of American Horror Films class and the students loved it. It's engaging and intelligent without relying too much on jargon or assuming a lot of film/rhetorical theory knowledge, so it's great for the casual or serious horror film enthusiast as well. The introduction is one of the best explanations of the importance of studying popular culture that I've read and each chapter carefully explores the selected horror films as there production and reception related to the cultural contexts that resonated with audiences and filmmakers and the time of each film's release. Moreover, the book artfully traces the history of horror film by linking each chapter/film/time period to those that came before it.

A must-read for anyone interested in the significance of popular culture/horror films to our individual and national identities.

A very handy guide -- the only one we needed!

I recently took a 4 day trip to Prague (6 days, including travel time) and took this guide book along. This book was the only one we needed to have a wonderful time there! This book was in my pocket at all times, and proved invaluable for finding landscapes, museums, etc. Especially handy are the grid-styled maps which help you locate various points of interest. This is true of all DK guide books, but I found myself using the Prague guide more than any other guide book I have owned (and I own 10 or more for destinations all over Europe) The back flap was consistently tucked into the map section which we pulled out of my pocket and referred to frequently while walking around the city.

I would say the weakest link of the DK guides is its lack of "practical info" -- for example, we were completely lost when we got to the train station to try to head to Kutna Hora (about an hour outside of Prague); the trip would have been impossible if a friendly English-speaking Czech local hadn't been nearby and offered to help us out. In addition, the accommodations listings could be a little more extensive, so you may want to research more on the web or other guidebooks at a library for booking a place to stay before you go.

The restaurant guide, on the other hand, was surprisingly good -- the short descriptions managed to get us to places that were right up our alley (for affordable food and drinks in hip, interesting environments, I recommend Radost FX and Klub Arkitektu)

Beautiful book. Helpful maps and historical info.

I love the Eyewitness series because the pictures and illustrations are both beautiful and informative. Also, I'm a visual learner so they are always appreciated. This book is no exception. If at any point I was confused about what I was looking at or where exactly I was, the images helped orientate me.

It took a little while to fully understand the maps of the different neighborhoods of Prague, but that may be because the city is not on a grid system. By the end of a week in the city, I only had to consult and not study the maps to find where I was headed. In any case, if you have the time to read through the book prior to opening up the maps while you're trying to navigate the streets, you'll greatly benefit. The Metro map is very helpful, too.

I found that the historical info provided for the major sites was thorough. Depending on your taste for information (or the time you have to spend at certain sites), it may be enough to warrant not renting an audio guide.

Why this guide is the best...

I used this guide on my recent trip to Prague and after numerous trips to the bookstores, I choose this book for the following reasons:

1) Large color pictures. Not only great to look at but helpful in identifying buildings that aren't necessarily labeled or labeled in English.

2) City is divided into sections. MUCH MORE USEFUL when walking around then having attractions listed by type. This just makes planning and improvising much easier.

3) Great walking tours and itineraries for 1-4 day trips.

Other then that this book is on par with the other heavy hitters in the other major travel guide categories. It goes into depth about Czech history, it has adequate explanations of major attractions, good descriptions of local customs, laws and transportation logistics and is just the right size for day packs.

The only minor drawback is the hotel and restaurant descriptions but with the internet, using a guide book for hotel/hostel booking has become obsolete.

Bottom Line: The price is little higher then average but it's worth it.

This book puts to much focus on formulas and often does a poor job at providing intuition behind results. Whether the heavy focus on formulas is a good approach or not would be a matter of taste if the book consistently provided mathematical proofs behind formuals. But as it often doesen't, a lot of them are just a waste of space and an excuse not to explain things in words. Some chapters are better than others. The chapter on univariate time series is not my favorite. What's good about the book is that it covers relevant topics.

This text is just what its product description says it is, practical and intuitive and very clearly written. I turn to this book first before reading something denser such as Woolridge, but the text would make a fine first text. A very good applied companion piece would be Cameron and Trivedi Microeconometrics: Methods and Applications. For the practitioner, start with Guide to refresh yourself and then turn to Microeconometrics to dig deeper and be on the frontier.

Noble Drew Ali was born in 1886 in North Carolina. At some point, as a young adult, he made his way to Newark, NJ. He was a man very much interested in religion, so he and his group of male friends had numerous discussions on the topic, disagreeing about a lot of different things. Ali was naturally drawn to the religion of Islam. Thinking that it was the natural religion for Black people, he pushed the notion forward that people typically known as “Black” and “African-American” in the United States should be referred to as “Moors” or “Asiatics,” with both of the terms being used interchangeably. His group studied The Koran, stating that they were being true to it. Ali argued that he was one in a long line of Prophets of Allah, but not necessarily the last one. He also felt that Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey was also a Prophet and Ali eventually visited Garvey while Garvey was in prison, having what he said was a very fruitful discussion with Garvey. Noble Drew Ali felt that,

"Being that Prophets are thoughts of Allah manifested in the flesh, in order to clearly communicate the messages of Almighty God Allah, Prophets are raised amongst specific segments of society speaking the language of the people whom they were sent to save. At some point, Noble Drew Ali made his way to Chicago, incorporating into his religious view ideas from Garvey's cultural nationalism, the idea that Asiatics or Moors are chosen people, who should build their own businesses and support one another. He made his group official in Chicago, naming it the “Moorish Science Temple Of America.” He re-wrote a version of The Koran and called it “The Holy Koran of the Moorish Science Temple of America,” stating that Allah inspired him to do so. Noble Drew Ali taught what he said are the 5 highest Divine principles of Islam, “Love, Truth, Peace, Freedom and Justice.” The group made it a point to adorn themselves in traditional clothing at official gatherings of the group. Somewhere in describing members of the Moorish Science Temple Of America, they referred to themselves as a “Nation,” a destined special people of Allah.
Starting with his one temple in Chicago, Noble Drew Ali fanned out over the country, seeking converts and starting other temples that spread The Word. At its peak, the group had temples in 15 states of the United States, mostly in larger cities, and this fact was highlighted at least one of their conventions.
The thing that makes Noble Drew Ali so noteworthy is the fact that he was the first person to have a significant Muslim and Islamic group in the major cities of America, beginning with his formation of his group in Chicago in the mid to late 1920's. Given their religious and cultural beliefs, with Islam as their bedrock, he and his group raise major Historical questions. One can easily see how either Elijah Muhammad or W.D. Fard, both of whom would become instrumental in the formation of the “The Nation Of Islam,” may have either been early associates of Noble Drew Ali, or to have even been members of the Moorish Science Temple of America, since the NOI would eventually follow the same process for establishing religious institutions all across America, with its religion of Islam, and by being highly influenced by the cultural nationalism of Marcus Garvey. I read this book as part of a personal project to get to know more about the background of Malcolm X, and though I can't officially tie Nobel Drew Ali to the eventual formation of The Nation Of Islam, it certainly would make sense that there is a tie. It simply would make sense. Although this is a very short book of only 120 pages, it is invaluable for giving one a great sense of the History and mission of Noble Drew Ali and the early roots of urban Islam in America, along with how Ali came to accomplish the things that he did. I would recommend the book for these reasons alone. It is a good resource.

"Prophet Noble Drew Ali: Saviour of Humanity" is by far the most factual book written on the life of Prophet Noble Drew Ali. I've read all the previous ones. Every assertion made in the book is supported by primary sources. Those derive from public sources such as The Chicago Defender, as well sources within the Moorish Science Temple of America, e.g., Moorish Guide newspaper articles published by Drew Ali himself, post cards, and elderly member interviews. Armed with said sources Azeem Hopkins-Bey, a life-long member of the MSTA has weaved together an outstanding narrative detailing the life,time and works of Noble Drew Ali. The sources are embedded within the pages. This work presents a living timeline whereby the reader is able to travel with the Prophet as he experiences highs and lows, successes and failures before ultimately hosting a National Convention of the Moorish Science Temple of America with representation from 15 different states in 1928. Also, the author offers a critical analysis of the teachings of Noble Drew, which is rarely done by prior writers attempting to write his story. The Moorish Divine National Movement founded by Noble Drew Ali is largely unknown in American society. This is unfortunate because as this work illustrates it was a significant movement in American history whereby an "unlettered" man named Noble Drew Ali prepared a comprehensive plan for a people who were civically abused, economically exploited, unaware of their history, and spiritually disconnected...establishing Islam among Americans of African descent in the process. The reader will complete this book wondering why s/he had not heard of Noble Drew Ali before as he taught true principles of universal brotherhood, civic responsibility, race pride and economic empowerment. I highly recommend this book!!!

I have never felt as close to The Prophet as I feel now since reading this astounding historical piece of literature. When reading

The book gives a synthetic presentation of the research performed in the field of sheet metal forming simulation during more than twenty years by the members of three teams: the Research Centre on Sheet Metal Forming – CERTETA (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania); AUTOFORM software-house company from Zürich, Switzerland and VOLVO automotive company from Sweden.

The first chapter reminds some fundamental topics of the theory of plasticity. A more extended chapter is devoted to the presentation of the phenomenological yield criteria, emphasizing the formulations proposed by the CERTETA team (BBC models). The sheet metal formability is discussed in a separate chapter. After presenting the methods used for the formability assessment, the discussion focuses on the forming limit curves. In this context, the authors emphasize their contributions to the mathematical modeling of forming limit curves. The aspects related to the implementation of the constitutive models in finite-element codes are discussed in the last chapter of the book. The performances of the models are proved by the numerical simulation of various sheet metal forming processes: hydroforming, deep-drawing and forming of the complex parts. The book is useful for the students, doctoral fellows, researchers and engineers who are mainly interested in the mechanical modeling and numerical simulation of sheet metal forming processes.

Authored by a variety of industry experts and one Self-Proclaimed-Die-Expert (Kam) the text is well balanced in it presentation of the newer constitutive modelling concepts as well as applications and a look beyond the math.
