The author is a well-known and distinguished writer in the field of International Criminal law who has demonstrated both in his other writings, as well as in this book, a particular attention to specificity. About the Author

William A. Schabas is director of the Irish Center for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland, Galway, where he also holds the professorship in human rights law. He is also a Global Legal Scholar at the University of Warwick School of Law, a Visiting Professor at Queen's University Belfast, professeur associé at the Université du Québec à Montréal, and a 'door tenant' at 9 Bedford Row, London.
Professor Schabas holds post-graduate degrees in history and in law from universities in Canada. He is the author of eighteen monographs and more than 225 articles dealing with international human rights law and international criminal law. Professor Schabas was a member of the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy.

Untimely Publication, yet Albeit Useful

This magnum opus on the Rome Statue of the International Criminal Court makes an excellent addition to the international law libraries of any scholar on the subject. His commentary and analysis of the individual pieces of the Statute provide a perfect foundation for the understanding of the structure and function of the Court, its jurisdiction, and its activities.

The only shame is the fact that the volume went to press at the same time that the Review Conference of the Rome Statute was taking place in Kampala, Uganda, from 31 May to 11 June in 2010. One of the more notable results of that conference was the inclusion of a definition of "crimes of aggression," something that had yet to be determined at the time of this volume's publication.

Luckily, a second edition would be much in order, and I hope that William Schabas is furiously working on it as we speak. However, this volume, considered in concert with a newer edition of the Rome Statute and the papers from the Review Conference in 2010, works for the time being.

About the Author
Born in East Ham, London, top guitar star Bert Weedon wanted to play the guitar from his very early childhood. When he was just twelve years old he persuaded his father to buy him a rather battered guitar off a stall in London's famous Petticoat Lane Street Market, for exactly 75p. And so began the career of one of Britain's most accomplished instrumental stars. Bert went on to play guitar with artists such as Tommy Stelle, Marty Wilde, Laurie London, Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and Billy Fure to name but a few. Artists who learned to play guitar from Play in a Day include Eric Clapton, Brian May, Hank Marvin and Paul McCartney.

Recommended as a primer for your guitar studies.

Bert Weedon's "Play In A Day" is I believe the best selling guitar instruction book of all time in England, and possibly around the world too, although it it not easy to find here in the U.S. (I got my copy via Amazon). Some of the famous British guitarists who got their start from this book include Eric Clapton, John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Sting, and a few others. Not bad company to be in. Bert Weedon is himself a legendary British guitarist. You can see some film clips of him playing on You Tube. Anyway, I am guitar player with a few years experience. I picked up a copy of this book just because I had heard about it for years, and even I learned a few things. Be open minded though; this book is intended to give you a foundation for playing guitar, just as is Mel Bay's Complete Method For Modern Guitar (which I recommended as a follow up to this book). It will not teach how to play Van Halen or Steve Vai tunes. Remember everybody: baby steps. Then after you've mastered this, you can move on to the more modern styles if you wish. Oh, and everybody please buy a metronome, even if it's a cheap one.

Covers all the basics in easy to understand language.

From beginning to end, this book applies to players of all ages and is easy to understand. He breaks it down into manageable chunks of information. He addresses the reader/player as if 2 friends are sitting down to talk. I recommend this to anyone who needs to cover the basics to start using their guitar. He even covers reading music for those who do not already know how. Highly recommended by someone who knows music, but bought this for their kids (16 and 18) to use, since explaining/teaching is not my strong suite. I learned things from it, too! Mostly, have fun.

When Mr. Weedin passed, I heard Eric Clapton & several other great guitarist interviewed about this man and the book. They all said they started as young teens with this book so I bought it for my husband. He has loved his new guitar because this book has made learning so much easier & simple.

About the Author
Michali Mazor is a 15-year-old South Floridian multi-talented young woman who is about to begin her junior year in high school. During the last few summers Michali worked with young children as their counselor in local day camps, an experience that solidified her resolve to pursue a career in education. As an educator, Michali plans to continue and enjoy her favorite pastimes, which include reading, writing, singing, and performing in musicals and comedies and share the love of the arts with her students. Michali's first book, "What I Want to Be When I Grow Up" is based on her own musings as a child. She is currently working on more books for young children as well as a novel for pre-teens.

Truly beautiful. Nothing else needs be said.

This is a wonderful children's book that addresses the age old question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The rhyming is wonderful. The artwork is consistent with the story. As the headline says, "Truly beautiful. Nothing else needs be said." A very nice book and worth the read and the creative and contemplative thinking that just might spawn.

The belief in a literal millennium was an important aspect in the Christian eschatology of the ante-Nicene age. Most of the Asiatic Church Fathers derived their chiliastic convictions not only from the millennial passage of Revelation, but also from the Jewish concept of a Golden Age, as described by the Hebrew Prophets and further developed by Jewish apocalyptic writers. The chiliastic doctrine was challenged, on exegetical and philosophical grounds, by the Alexandrian school of theology in the third century. The Church's elevation to imperial favour by Constantine was followed by a further shift in the understanding of the millennium. The chiliastic hope of a future earthly reign of Christ was substituted with the view of a realized millennium constituting the secular dominion of the Roman Church. The factor which most contributed to this change was Augustine's spiritualized interpretation of the first resurrection. He understood it to mean a resurrection of those dead in sin, raised to spiritual life. In his book, De civitate dei, he advanced the opinion that the kingdom of God was already set up at Christ's first coming and nothing remained to be accomplished before the final judgment except the brief reign of the Antichrist. Thus the teaching of a literal millennium became discredited because it was perverted by some of its friends and misrepresented by its opponents.

Dr. Martin Erdmann studied theology in Columbia, SC (Master of Divinity), Basel, Switzerland and Aberdeen, Scotland (Master of Theology). In 1999, he was awarded a doctoral degree in modern Church History at Brunel University, Uxbridge, England. In 1996, he founded Online Communication Systems, inc. in Columbus, Ohio. For four years he headed up the NT department of the Staatsunabhängige Theologische Hochschule Basel (State-independent Theological Seminary), Switzerland. In his position as Senior Scientist at the University Hospital in Basel, he was involved in researching the ethical implications of Nanotechnology. He was also an Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies (distance education) at Patrick Henry College, Virginia. Currently, he is the Director of the Verax Institute. Dr. Erdmann is married to Joy and has two children, Estelle Chérie and Johannes Luc.

There are theological books which are wordy, but nevertheless profound and theologically sound. Other theological books are theologically questionable, but very readable. The newly published edition Millennium: Historical Exegetical Debate of author Dr. Martin Erdmann is neither wordy nor superficial. It is an excellent, well documented study about the history of patristic debate concerning the millennium. What makes this book so extraordinary is the fascinating and gripping presentation of the debate among church fathers about the millennium. The author shows the origin of the two competing hermeneutical systems, pre- and amillennialism that dominates the theological debate until our day. He also discusses the postmillennial and dispensational view. Martin Erdmann demonstrates impressively how the amillennial position took precedence over the premillennial doctrine. Amillennialism dominated the debate since the 4th century and beyond the Reformation era. There is sufficient ground to challenge amillennialism not only on the basis of the writings of many church fathers, who believed in a literal millennium, but also, more important, based on sound hermeneutics and a thorough exegesis of Revelation 20. I can fully endorse the conclusion of Dr. Martin Erdmann, who “believes that the interpretation which accounts best for the language and context of Revelation 20:1-10, is the system of premillennialism.” This book combines theological excellency with a captivating style of writing.

Dr. Erdmann, who is a thorough researcher, considers the exegetical and historical foundations of the various views of the millennium. He begins with an introduction to the genre of Jewish apocalyptic literature, then presents an exegesis of Revelation 20. This is followed by a review of the hermeneutical principles and the views of the early church fathers through Augustine. Regardless of one's view of the millennium, this is a very important book in understanding the debate. It is well-documented in regard to the facts presented, clear and precise in style, and courteous in tone. I highly recommend it.

Mari Sandoz (1896–1966) is the noted author of Cheyenne Autumn, Old Jules, and The Battle of the Little Bighorn, all available in Bison Books editions. Michael Punke is the author of several books, including Last Stand: George Bird Grinnell, the Battle to Save the Buffalo, and the Birth of the New West and Fire and Brimstone: The North Butte Mining Disaster of 1917.

Hearsay From Those Who Were There

I love Mari Sandoz books, even though her history can be a little "off". She based her books on stories she heard as a child sitting behind the wood stove when they thought she was in bed. Like oral stories told everywhere, which are different with each telling as the story teller "colors" the tale in the telling, the accrue some inaccuracies. An example I can give is the story of William Averill Comstock, the Chief of Scouts for the 7th Cavalry known as the "Ace of Scouts". In the Buffalo Hunters, Sandoz says that Comstock was a half-breed Cheyenne, which was a common belief among the men of the 7th Cavalry which Comstock did not dispel, as it added to his cred as a "White Indian", the perfect Indian Scout. In an age of taciturn men, others would try to fill in a back story for these folks which was often larger than real life. In Comstock's true history, he was son of General Horace Comstock and Sarah Sabine Cooper, he was the grand nephew of James Fenimore Cooper and had been raised on the Leather Stocking Tales to the point that he thought of himself as Natty Bumppo and the stories made up around him added to his cred as a scout. Samdoz's books are interesting in their ability to pass on the stories that were in the grapevine of the day. As history, however, they don't follow the written records and are a little off.

Here is another example. Although many history books tell about the over-hunting of the bison and tell the history of the declining numbers. I have never found a history book that explained how it was done. In The Buffalo Hunters, Sandoz explains how the hunters ripped a hide from a fresh bison kill by cutting a ring around the skin of the neck behind the horns, cutting from the neck to the tip of the tail down the belly, turning the beast over and pinning its nose to the ground with a picket pin, tying a yoked team of mules to a hank of skin at the neck and pulling the skin off with the mule team. Sandoz explains that it must be done to a fresh kill and if neglected for a few hours would require long work with a skinning knife. Only from the mouths of men who had done it would she have known how the hide hunters performed this task.

To summarize, as history Sandoz must be taken with a grain of salt. As word of mouth from the pioneers who were there, a "listening tube", as it were, into the grapevine of the day and their actual experiences, she is extremely valuable.

Woman at the top

Apart from her unique historical research and perspective, as a native-born Nebraskan in 1896, Mari Sandoz is a first-class writer. It is appalling how she is practically ignored by the east coast literati establishment. Does New York think a western pioneer woman can't write about anything of interest to them? Where is the flashy high-style they love in F. Scott Fitzgerald? Why should they care about the annihilation of an entire species - almost - of the buffalo in the Great Plains, not to mention the methodical genocide of the Indians?

It is difficult to stomach the wanton, wasteful slaughter of millions of perfect animals in the 19th century, yes. Her unrelenting stampede of facts is often hard to bear. She does not ever let up, as she has proven in her masterpiece 'Cheyenne Autumn'. Slaughter after greedy slaughter in only a matter of a few years after the Civil War, leaves the modern reader reeling - but it is the same reckless and unethical destruction we're witnessing today in the depletion of the aquifers and grasslands in the plains, and the abandoned farmhouses and crumbling bridges in the Dust Bowl.

Sandoz should be raised to the pantheon of American writers - not just "western historians"! - with Steinbeck and Stegner, and assume her rightful place in the top echelons of literature. Other unknown native authors of the west, like John Neihardt and David Seals, should also be placed in the lists of '100 greatest American writers' along with her. After all, other women like Cather and Woolf are allowed routine respect, not just as "women writers" (gads!) but simply as "writers".

Awesome book

I really enjoyed this book. Full of history and it really pulled me in. I enjoyed how the author would mention a buffalo hunter in passing, only to point out how famous or infamous that same person would later become.

T.A. Barron is the award-winning author of fantasy novels such as The Lost Years of Merlin epic—soon to be a major motion picture. Wings of fire

The ancient dragon Valdearg was briefly introduced in T.A. Barron's "Seven Songs." So guess what the antagonist of "The Raging Fires" is!

The third volume of this Arthurian fantasy epic introduces some nasty new beasties, magical threats and some explosive dragon action. Barron seems to have overcome his initial roughness, and allows the plot to flow as smoothly as his nature-based writing, as well as the introduction of some interesting new characters.

After barely saving his mother's life, Emrys Merlin is relaxing with his family... only to have their peace destroyed when a monstrous magic-sucking monster called a kreelix appears. They were supposedly extinct, but have somehow reappeared -- and to make matters worse, Valdearg (aka "Wings of Fire") has awakened from his slumber, and is on the warpath for whoever killed his hatchlings.

The problem is that there is a prophecy that Wings of Fire's clash with his old enemy (presumed to be a wizard) will result in both of them dying. So Merlin sets out to discover what is happening on "Fincayra's darkest day," and finds himself enmeshed with strange sorceresses, a magical conspiracy, a pair of deer-people, and eventually with the ancient dragon himself...

"The Raging Fires" sets aside the foresty Celtic symbolism of the previous two books, in favor of fire -- harps burn, lava burns, dragons blast fire, and homicidal anger rages out of control. He also seems to have exhausted his mythological store for the moment, because most of the magical goings-on in this book are pretty original creations.

Barron's writing sometimes gets a bit overlush, but it's loaded down with haunting, detailed moments (the deer-people's transformations), eerie threats, and the occasional moment of comic relief (the baby dragon). But the story is overall very grim, particularly since this is the first of Merlin's stories in which his death seems to be assured. Whether or not he will actually die, there's a dark cloud hanging over everything he does.

The biggest problem is perhaps the kreelixes -- they're an interesting idea, but they sound more like something out of Star Trek than Arthurian legend. I'm just saying.

Merlin is a little older and wiser in this one, and he seems to be feeling the first stirrings of romantic feelings for the bland deer-woman Hallia. And Valdearg is a wonderful antagonist -- he'a an aggressive killer, but he's not evil and at times he even shows signs of dignity and endearing sentiment.

"The Raging Fires" temporarily ditches the Celtic myth'n'legend, in favor of dragons and a few new inventions of the author's. A solid, richly-written fantasy.

"The Dragon Avenges His Dreams Yet Unhatched..."

The third book in T.A. Barron's Merlin saga, chronicling the adventures of the young wizard before his famous exploits in the Arthurian legends, continues on from The Lost Years and The Seven Songs of Merlin. Merlin has been reunited with his mother and sister on the magical island of Fincayra and is looking forward to continuing his learning in the magical arts. But it is not to be, for elsewhere on the island the ancient dragon Valdearg has awakened from his decades-long slumber to discover that his unhatched eggs have been destroyed - and he's not happy.

A prophesy hints that Merlin will be the one to end the scourge of the dragon - but at the cost of his own life. Furthermore, he will need the precious gemstone known as the Galator to complete his quest, a treasure that he bartered away back in the first book to save a friend's life. Further trouble arises in the form of Urnalda, a dwarf-enchantress who has the power to strip Merlin of his magical power, and the kreelix - monsters that feast on magical abilities. Beset on all sides by these opponents, Merlin struggles to complete his goals and face the terrible dragon before it's too late.

Barron keeps the story flowing at a brisk pace, helped along by the short chapters and the breezy prose. Told in first-person narration by Merlin himself, there is a sense of immediacy to the proceedings, as well as rich descriptions of the landscape and travailing of Fincayra. Old characters are present (requiring foreknowledge of the previous books) and new ones are introduced, and the tapestry of this land and its history has further layers and details added to it. Hallia takes the place of Rhia as Merlin's female companion, but the deer-woman is not quite as interesting or endearing as the forest-girl, though Valdearg the dragon (also known as "Wings of Fire") makes for an intriguing not-quite villain.

Although the knowledge that Merlin gleans and the development that he goes through is not as pitch-perfectly mapped out as that of Taran in Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain (a series that I was continually reminded of whilst reading the Merlin saga) it's clear that he's on his way to becoming the wise wizard of the legends. I can easily imagine this youth as the mentor of a future King Arthur. Though there are twists and turns throughout the story (some clever, some pedestrian) it is ultimately Merlin's kind heart that sets him apart from the rest of his kind, and Barron is clever enough to sow some seeds that will no doubt come to fruition in future books.

Young readers who enjoy the likes of Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia will probably appreciate Barron's take on a young Merlin, and though they don't *quite* reach that level of classic storytelling, they're enjoyable and well-written fantasy for the younger crowd. "The Fires of Merlin" suffers a little from middle-book syndrome, with what with a lot of follow-on from previous books and set-up for future installments, but will have readers eager to press on with The Mirror of Fate.

Be warned that this publication used to be titled The Fires of Merlin. There's bound to be some confusion, so make sure you double-check exactly what you're getting before ordering. Other than the title-change, the text remains entirely the same.
