Excellent, Illuminating, Inspiring

This is a fantastic course with an effortless master bass player and teacher. Carol Kaye is a really good educator; she deftly breaks bass concepts down and explains a process which illuminates what is a bass player must know in order to anticipate and develop bass lines in any situation. She points out the important material to study and get a solid grip on so that a bass player is prepared and can be creative. I love her approach and am so glad that this DVD is so comprehensive; I have some other great educational DVDs but they're no more than 40 minutes at most so having so much ground covered in-depth over two hours is like taking a master lesson with Carol. I'll watch this repeatedly to supplement my lessons at BerkleeMusic and keep honing the good taste she knows and transmits by osmosis. Great archival material!

Serious instruction presented by a master bassist and musician.

This DVD may have been originally recorded more than 25 years ago, but so what. Kaye's instruction is just as valuable today as then. Did you think that bass playing well had become easier since then?
This DVD appears to be somewhat the video version of Kaye's CD "Jazz Bass." This is not for people who want to play bass today with their new band so they can gig this coming weekend. The front of the case reads "A complete study for serious-minded bass players . . . . If you just want to play around with a bass without learning music, this DVD is not for you. What Kaye presents here in two hours takes many hundreds of hours of practice to master—months into years. One of the tracks is only a minute long, but you will play it over and over to fully understand it, and it will take you many weeks before you make it your own it in all keys all over your fingerboard.
This is heavy, heady stuff presented by a master bassist. Her insights are worth way more than the price of this DVD. I own a half dozen bass instruction DVDs, but this one is tops. It'll keep me busy for years, I'm betting.

After reading all of the the negative reviews, I am not too surprised. Carol is a wonderful teacher and has so much to offer those who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get busy! However there are some folk that seemingly have to be spoon feed. Its a real shame what is happening to people today. We have GPS but unable to read a map, calculators but can't do simple math, cell phones but are anti-social in their general behavior. When I was a kid and got the call for diner, diner was -- what ever was on your plate. Today the young people coming up tell the adults when they want to eat, what they want to eat and then go to their room to eat it. Lack of respect for authority in the home translates to lack of respect for authority outside of the home. Don't get me wrong, I think technology is a good thing and can make all of our lives easier -- but it's just a tool and should not replace things like common sense, conversational skills and a strong work ethic.
