Alcohol abuse has killed and impoverished American Indians since the seventeenth century, when European settlers began trading rum for furs. In the first book to probe the origins of this ongoing social crisis, Peter C. Mancall explores the liquor trade's devastating impact on the Indian communities of colonial America. The author follows the trail of rum from the West Indian producers to the colonial distributors and on to the Indian consumers in the eastern woodlands. To discover why Indians participated in the trade and why they experienced such a powerful desire for alcohol, he addresses current medical views on alcoholism and reexamines the colonial era as a time when Indians were forming new strategies for survival in a world that had been radically changed. Finally, Mancall compares Indian drinking in New France and New Spain with that in the British colonies. Forever shattering the stereotype of the drunken Indian, Mancall offers a powerful indictment of English participation in the liquor trade and a new awareness of the trade's tragic cost for the American Indians.

A Sober, Somber Story

Despite the subject, or actually because of it, this is a very sober look at early American history. Most accounts of Indian-European relations note the liquor trade's deleterious effects on indigenous societies. Mancall has finally foregrounded the topic and the issues it raises, and the picture is disturbing and tragic. For centuries observers have debated the physiological aspects of Indian vulnerability to alcohol. But there is no doubt that combined with land loss, warfare, devastating disease epidemics and ongoing assaults on their cultures, Indians have suffered greatly from strong spirits pushed at them by Europeans. Liquor was just one commodity snaring Indians in networks of mercantile capitalism, but unlike firearms or manufactured goods, it had no redeeming values. Along with destroying Indian bodies, alcohol clouded judgement, leading to sale of irreplaceable lands and promoting the destructive fur and deerskin trades. It weakened military and political resistance to the continuous onslaught against Native Americans. Numerous revivalist and millenarian religious movements developed in response to alcohol abuse, some of which still endure. Mancall's study is strongly based on primary sources while using social-science perspectives to interpret the data. Though the book ends around 1800, the patterns described still operate today.
