About the Author
JD Viharini is the author of Enjoying India: The Essential Handbook, a popular cultural and practical guide to India. American by birth, she is a single woman who has been living in India for 8 years, and who had previously made 15 trips to India, traveling extensively throughout most of the country, mostly solo. She holds an MS in Vedic Studies. She has learned that traveling smart and functioning in harmony with the local culture is the key to staying safe and enjoying life in India. Over the years, she has traveled around India first class, sardine class, and everything in between.

Reccomend reading for men and women traveling to India

I found this book an excellent guide to Indian culture. So many travel to another country and do as they please - without any respect for the country's culture. Then they wonder why they are not experiencing harmony on their visit. The Indian culture is quite different than those in the West. This handbook is a must for women traveling to India. I also reccomend men reading this book to obtain knowledge of the Indian culture. If Richard Gear had read this book before he went to India, he would most likely have found himself much more welcome there. However, this author has also written another book "Enjoying India, the Essential Handbook" which men may enjoy even more.

Accurate and informative guide - it's spot on

This book is a quick, worthwhile read. As a single woman who has been to India at least 10 times, there was very little in the book that was new to me, but still I read it with interest, as I could appreciate all the more the accuracy of J.D. VIharini's advice and the concise, yet thorough way she covered the topic. I find myself going back to her advice again and again as confirmation of my own experience. For those who wish broader advice about traveling in India, I highly recommend her other book Enjoying India - The Essential Handbook. All her advice is practical and insightful, her writing clear and easy to read.

I can warmly recommend

This is a perfect book for those who want to understand how you can travel and discover India without being unsafe or risk your safety. The book gives you hands-on and practical tips on how to mainly prevent situations that can be intimidating. I can warmly recommend it to all women traveling to India. I myself have been to India many times and followed the author's advice and never experienced any unpleasant situations. Take note of the book's knowledge and do not let fear stop you from getting to discover this amazing country! Kristina from Sweden
