The Stoic philosopher Epictetus was born on the eastern edges of the Roman Empire in A.D. 55, but The Art of Living is still perfectly suited for any contemporary self-help or recovery program. To prove the point, this modern interpretation by Sharon Lebell casts the teachings in up-to-date language, with phrases like "power broker" and "casual sex" popping up intermittently. A challenging and fruitful book -- well worth reading.

This is not a literal translation of Epictetus's manual, but it communicates the essence of the manual in accessible English. I used this text in philosophy of education courses for many years for the purpose of challenging student teachers to reflect together on how they might live a worthwhile life, and how living such a life might affect them and their students. Ms. Lebell's translation is uniquely valuable for that kind of work. I have found nothing comparable. It is not too long, not too wordy, yet consistently challenging in its ethical stance. I have also recommended this book to friends. Those who have read it universally have been moved by it -- not that they accept Stoicism, but that they have been able to use its wisdom in their everyday lives. Do not mistake the text for a self-help book. It is one of the clearest, simplest, and challenging statements of Stoicisim you are likely to find.

Gratifying

Even better than what I expected. Simple truths that we all should aspire to live by. Much needed reading for all living in today's world. One of my favorite lines: "It is our duty to stand by our friends in their hour of need". So few live by this standard these days. Life is so much more fulfilling when it is lived for more than just ones self.

You Can't Go Wrong Reading This Version

I've read the traditional translations of Enchiridion and Discourses by Epictetus and I've read the 1 star ratings (grumpy bastards!) of this version by LeBell and I can happily say that while Lebell may dim it down a few shades too many for some (and this seems to really gall the 1 star people), she --- like a contemporary musician who plays Bach or Mozart--- keeps the classic alive through her rendering of it. How can we not benefit from that?
If you read the traditional translations of Epictetus's work, you'll be the better for it.
If you read this book, you'll be the better for it.
As to how much better off you'll be, well, as Epictetus would say, that's entirely up to you.
But you can't go wrong.
