Completely rewritten from cover to cover, the contemporary new 8th edition of CONCEPTS OF CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY provides comprehensive coverage and the latest information on a full spectrum of substance use disorders and the compounds commonly abused. Topics include: the abuse of and addiction to alcohol; how the active agent in marijuana, THC, affects neural growth and development; the emerging body of evidence suggesting a relationship between marijuana abuse and psychotic disorders; the emerging body of evidence suggesting that marijuana is not as benign as it was thought to be even a few years ago; and updated information on the abuse of cough syrups, a trend that has evolved in adolescent substance abusers in the past decade. Adding to the book's usefulness and relevance, Doweiko also covers topics not usually discussed in other substance abuse texts, including: abuse of anabolic steroids; inhalants; many of the forms of infectious disease associated with substance abuse; how the "war on drugs" has actually contributed to the problem of substance abuse/addiction in this country; the relationship between substance abuse and many infectious diseases; and the latest information on the "medical marijuana" debate. Providing a comprehensive overview of the problems of substance abuse and addiction, students report that they appreciate the author's balanced approach in contrast to a tendency to "preach" to the reader that "drugs are bad for you". Student feedback indicates that they value the clear and detailed information provided, allowing the student to form their own opinion about the compound(s) being discussed in each chapter.

Critique of Concepts of Chemical Dependency by Doweiko
By Barbara Greten
This book gives a solid overview of chemicals of use/abuse, focusing particularly upon alcohol. The one caveat I have about recommending it unconditionally is that the author seems to interweave his bias along with the factual material, such that it is sometimes hard to tease out the actual facts from the propaganda. But the book is user-friendly and, if someone is wanting to get an overall sense of various substances of use/abuse and their effects, this book certainly has much to offer.

comprehensive yet lengthy
By J. D. Johnson
I bought this textbook as a required text for an addiction program planning course. The author implements his opinion throughout the book. The chaters tend to be long, and concepts are reiterated without clarity. I would have liked more detail on the biochemistry of drug transformation. I do appreciate the correlation the author makes consistently regarding prescription drugs and the potential for addiction especially for individuals in recovery.

Great book but poor quality
By CoolGramma613
This is a tremendously great book on chemical dependency, however, the quality of the book and its construction are definitely lacking. I could not believe the flimsiness of the cover after the price that I paid for it. It is a soft cover, and is very thin. After opening it once, it immediately stayed open. There are many typographical errors in it with occasional words missing which makes it annoying to read occasionally. Now that I have that out of the way, as I said, it is a great book on the subject at hand. One of the things that I like about it are that each chapter is very well organized and the chapters are arranged in a logical progression, though one can pick out any chapter and it will stand alone without reading prior chapters with the exception of having to read chapter one. If you ever have a chance to purchase this book in hardback, do it because the softback is just not worth the money paid for it. I do NOT understand why the book is so expensive aside from the fact that textbooks are not printed in the same numbers as bestselling novels, so the price is inflated to pay for the printing. It sure did not spend much time on the editing floor, checking for mistakes! However, and this is a BIG however, if you want to learn about this subject, this is the book to get. Just do yourself a favor, and one for everyone else who must buy it, and write to the publisher to complain about the quality of the binding, cover, and typographical errors.
